All due respect to the thread author and his opinion on Pygmalion being an influence, I submit he has missed the point. A good deal of entertainment right now is the Pygmalion dream from American Idol to Survivor.

It is even in a broad way responsible for films like Groundhog Day and Miss Congeniality.

The idea that with enough help, support, money, love or whatever it is you need to remake yourself into Cinderella..yet another Pygmalion motif is a powerful one for our Psyche. Ooops.. one more variation on that theme.

We are all here because of another variation on that broad theme.. the redemption of Vader, by love of his son, to the Jedi. happy

Just a thought.

The idea that you don't find your perfect match, you make it out of a seemingly imperfect one . . . this is the basis of the entire romantic comedy genre, is it not?

Fair enough. I've had an unfortunate tendency to focus too much on their slim explanations for their choices and not enough time considering the effects beyond that.

87: Dr. Strangelove
Category: Movies
In a nutshell: Ex-Nazi of the movie of the same name.
What the book says: "Worldwide, thirty thousand nuclear warheads still exist. More than ten thousand are in the former Soviet Union, where safeguards are questionable. If terrorists take over a weapons system with thousands of nuclear warheads, then Dr. Strangelove will be relevant once more."
What I say: I've not seen the movie in question, but from the sound of it, the events depicted by the movie would be considered more influential than the character himself.

He's hardly the most relevant character; maybe General Ripper or Buck Turgidson. Now that's satire. Strangelove is just over the top spoofing. It works, I mean, but as a character, no.

87: Perry Mason
Category: Television
In a nutshell: Lawyer defends lots of innocent people.
What the book says: "We can blame Perry Mason for inspiring several entire generations of lawyers in their chosen profession."
What I say: Probably the first really well-known TV lawyer, and we all know how big that genre has become. And according to this, the claim that Perry Mason inspired people to enter law has some merit. I'll give this one a maybe, leaning toward yes.

Perry Mason convinced an entire generation that guilty people break down on the stand and confess all. Yeah, right. tongue

I'm sorry folks, I didn't realize it had been so long.

85: Luke Skywalker
Category: Adventure
In a nutshell: If I have to tell you, I think you've come to the wrong place.
What the book says: Mostly talks about Campbell's hero's journey. Also a little about the Force and Reagan's Star Wars push.
What I say: Well, we're here discussing this, aren't we? I think if you want a better figure for the hero's journey, you can probably go back and find one, but have they ingrained themselves into modern culture as well? Not so much.

Now this I can understand. Ditto for Perry Mason, but I failed to post when he was the topic. I just kept thinking about the reference in Boston Legal a couple weeks back about courtroom theatrics.

Anyway, Luke Skywalker. Hard to say anything about him. Great modern example of the classic hero, if that makes sense. With his journey from Tatooine farm boy to Jedi master, he's been influencing the world for 30 years (this came out sounding like a blurb for his memoir).

Luke Skywalker is the standard Campbellian hero...starts from nothing, modest and obscure upbringing...slowly gains power...redeems the second biggest villain around, and causes him to kill the greatest villain...

84: Buck Rogers
Category: Comics and Animation
In a nutshell: Modern day man frozen, wakes up 500 years later.
What the book says: "During the course of fifty years, Buck Rogers has fueled the imagination of a generation that dreamed of expanding our world. And they, in turn, inspired the next generation into real-life space adventures. More than any other fictional character, Buck Rogers can properly lay claim to be the godfather of the Space Age.
What I say: I can see him being on the list. They also mention Flash Gordan, though he's not on the list. I'm not sure which one I would have gone with.
