How do you know he never lived?

He's a mythical figure.

It's a powerful iconic myth, though. Fly too close to the sun and suffer the consequences.

He is the figure of the dangers of failing to be responsible.

He definitely belongs on the list.

79: The Cat in the Hat
Category: Children's Literature
In a nutshell: Behatted cat causes mischief, expresses value of cleaning up one's messes.
What the book says: They try to imitate Seuss' style with this entry. It's terrible, and you should be glad I'm sparing you any direct quotes. Anyway, they point out the use of Seuss books to teach kids how to read and such.
What I say: The influential figure they describe here is Dr. Seuss, not the Cat in the Hat. The Cat is in one book. (And a sequel that I vaguely remember.) The Cat is strongly associated with Seuss, but I don't think the character is sufficiently influential. I mean, sure, he's recognizable, but they're trying to give him credit for "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" and the like.

I'm with you on this. But they can't put Suess himself in, because he was a living person.

And it's not that I think they should, in case that's what it seemed like I was implying. It's just that they've expanded one character's role to include books the character was never connected to outside of being by the same author, and author and creation need to be separated for a list like this. It'd be nice to find a way for a character from Seuss to be on the list, but the sum of his work is where the influence comes from, and no one character of his can really carry enough weight to make the list, I think.

He is sort of representative of the id, I think.

But he's a cat, not a person.

I can't believe I'm arguing the point with them. tongue

The Grinch or Horton, maybe. The Cat, no.

Though they are people, either. happy

78: Joe Camel
Category: Commerce
In a nutshell: He is a camel. He smokes.
What the book says: "Joe revitalized the 'hook-'em-early' strategy used decades earlier by car and oil companies. Joe Camel has been called the Pied Piper of Emphysema. In 2013, the five-year0olds of 1997 will be old enough to legally buy cigarettes. Which brand do you think they're going to buy?"
What I say: We could have a huge, Senate-type debate over Joe Camel and the impact of advertising on children. I'm not exactly an expert on it myself.

Also, yes, not a person. tongue

I don't have much to say on Mr. Camel, but I will note that this was quite possibly the best "In a Nutshell" yet. laugh

Yes, nothing like selling deadly products to underage children to earn my respect. Influential? Undoubtedly. Morally repugnant? Absolutely.

I've always loved Doonesbury's spoof on this, the adorable talking cigarette Mr. Buttz. I mean, seriously, just think about this, guys.

The people who invented this guy need a punch in the nose.
