Has it been proven that she never lived? I always thought that the Iliad might be an extremely fictionalized account of real people.

Next: St. Valentine

Another person that actually existed, I thought.

Apparently "St. Valentine" can refer to any of three separate (but real) martyrs. Which is weird, but doesn't make them fictional. tongue

QFT. There might be a legend around him, but he's still a real person(s) who actually lived.

"What is it, Lieutenant Sebastian?"
"It's just the Rebels, sir. They're here."
"My God, man! Do they want tea?"
"No, I think they're after something more than that, sir. I don't know what it is, but they brought a flag."

57. Atticus Finch

Atticus Finch is, of course, the virtuous father of "To Kill a Mockingbird"

Atticus Finch is the ultimate father figure all dads can aspire to embody. But at the same time, he doesn't come off as a Mary Sue character (or Gary Stu as the case may be).

56. Loch Ness Monster (Nessie)

One problem; this is not a person.

But the monster only one person can see is a persistent theme in Western popular culture.

Another problem; lack of proof is not lack of existence.

Example: Our forum mod. Have any of you actually met him? tongue

Didn't the guy who took the famous Ness picture admit that he staged it?

Yeah.

But to counterpoint, there's the 1960s-era Dinsdale video that the RAF decided was 1) not a fake and 2) something alive.

The first reported sighting of Nessie was by St. Columba in the 5th century CE, so that pre-dates the "Surgeon's Photo" by just a couple o' years. wink

I'm not saying that Nessie is a real, existing creature, but reports of the beastie are far more ancient than any 20th century hoax.
