I had utterly forgotton about that! Yes, such a perfect moment! God, I loved every second of that fallout.
Made me wonder though how many other faux-critics are out there . . . surely these guys weren't the only ones or even the first to try it. They were just the sloppiest at it.
What'll you bet Roger Ebert is actually animatronic?

I've heard that rumour; if so, he is apparently breaking down.

37. Sofia Coppola's turn in The Godfather Part III.
For Francis Ford Coppola, bringing in camera-shy daughter Sofia — even if she was a last-second replacement for Winona Ryder — as coquettish Mary Corleone was the kiss of death.
I haven't seen it, as much as I oved the first one, because I heard it was awful -- largly due to this.

It wasn't Sofia's fault, exactly; Coppola is much inclined to nepotism, and it's notable that his family seldom/never do their best work for him. If they stayed in his movies, they'd have no careers at all (Nicholas Cage, for one). Winona Ryder was originally cast, and when she dropped out, he substituted Sofia. This showed his power, but she took the brickbats. And when he couldn't sign Robert Duval, he substituted George Hamilton in the role. This was a cut at Duval, because Hamilton was lightweight in the extreme, but the movie suffered. Coppola's ego was the problem, in both cases.

Oh absolutely. It was painful to watch. Poor Andy Garcia.

Sophia was bad but there were much worse things about this movie, and even though it could be considered bad I'd still recommend it and give it a mild thumbs up

Oh, there were good things about the movie; but Coppola had developed into his own worst enemy.

She was a teenager, so I hold her less at fault. Directors tend to be raging egomaniacs, and this is an example. Another is John Huston; he used his 16-year-old daughter Anjelica as the lead in "A Walk With Love and Death". She was terrible, and her career took a long time to recover.
Basically the director is saying the old Hitchcockian trope: "Actors are cattle."
In other words, it doesn't matter who is cast, because the director is the important player.
Well, as we all know, it does matter who's cast, and a director can help an actor or actress, but can't overcome complete inexperience.

I find the movie quite moving actually; Pacino is brilliant and he takes Michael in a completely new and interesting direction. The confession scene in the courtyard is absolutely heartbreaking.
But Sofia was certainly pretty bad; you know someone's bad when you're wishing with all your heart for Winona Ryder to be playing the part instead.

36. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
It was supposed to usher in the era of the "synthespian," a CGI Uberform that would take over Hollywood. With a price tag of $137 million and a net loss of $105 million, Fantasy ended up being the first and last movie made by Japan-based Square Co.

Agreed. The Godfather Part III is a great Mafia movie.
As for the Final Fantasy movie, a friend told me that in order to get what's going on, you have to have an understanding of Asian philosophy, which is a shame, because the movie is beautiful to look at.
