The conclusion seemed to be that Woody has some fairly devoted fans who love what he does. All others beware.
Well, I must say here that though I consider myself a fan, there are some Woody films that I cannot abide. Bullets Over Broadway is insufferable IMO, even though it got good reviews and was a modest hit. Melinda, Melinda and Hollywood Ending are both terrible, especially the latter, which is embarrassingly dumb. So the idea that a loyal fan will uncritically accept all of Allen's work as superb is untrue. We'll just have to chalk up my appreciation of Match Point as a matter of subjective taste.
I disagree about the lack of chemistry between the two leads: I think they smoulder together on-screen. As for coincidences, they do happen in real life -- that was in fact what the film was superficially about. The depiction of the investigators as clueless incompetents is probably closer to the real-world truth than the oft-repeated cliche of the brilliant, intuitive sleuth. As far as "saying something that hasn't been said", I don't understand why Woody should be expected to achieve that in his films, when no one else in cinema does either. But in closing, I will repeat my earlier observation that Johanssen's shift in character from a "must-have-her" goddess of lust to a clingy, no-future hack is insightful, cyncially realistic and quite original.

Some people find Rgys-Meyers to be dull-eyed and lackluster, but I think there's a subtlety there that his detractors are missing. That said, I haven't seen the Tudors, so I'm not qualified to comment on his performance in that. I do like him, however, in Match Point, in Bend it Like Beckham, and in Oliver Stone's Alexander.

He was okay in "Beckham;" but he's quite awful in "The Tudors", and equally as bad in the TV remake of "The Magnificent Ambersons" as George Minafer.

No, we probably don't. But I never had a problem with an innocent, clumsy, good-hearted character in what is essentially a children's movie.
I found him a bit annoying at times, but a lot of kids loved him. I think people over reacted. Jar Jar reminded me a LOT of Roger Rabbit. Particularly the vocalization.
I certainly don't consider him a "disaster." Certainly didn't hurt the Phantom Menace's box office returns. It remains the # 1 Star Wars film at the box office. As the kids who grew up with Jar Jar get older, I think their affection for him will shock the older Star Wars fans.

Actually, he was important in the story line. Without Jar Jar, there wouldn't have been the fight on the Naboo plains, the Queen and her forces could not have entered the palace, the Trade Federation would have gotten the treaty signed and would now be in control of the planet. Sound bad to the overall storyline? I don't think so. Clumsy and folish, yes, but unimportant? No.

I have no major issues with Jar Jar. It's too bad that Lucas abandoned the character along the way. He could have had Jar Jar grow out of his clumsiness and turn into a mature character. I thought that it was cool that Jar Jar was conned into bringing up the emergency powers stuff.

I think the biggest problem with Jar Jar was the choice in vocalization. Had they gone with a more serious vocal performance instead of the manic Roger Rabbit we got. Think about it- most people didn't have a problem with General Tarpals. It may not have saved the character but I think it would have seriously improved his image and vastly reduced any criticism of him.

A miscalculation, yes. Disaster, no. One of the biggest disasters in Hollywood history? Given the competition, that's just silly.

Jar Jar was annoying, but I never really had the seething hatred for him that some people had. I do agree that it's time to let it go.
