I had a feeling I should been more clear what criticism I was leveling at each film.
The no-killing thing is frankly, the biggest part of Batman's psychology, and therefore, the driving force behind what he does.
If he kills, there's flatly no difference between the people he's fighting, and himself.
Plus, of course, it's absurd to think that murdering anyone-which is pretty much what Batman has done in each film up to Begins-would be ignored by the society he lives in. Batman lives on the edge of legality as it is; there's been several instances where he's been declared an outlaw without killing anyone. Killing-or even the appearance of him having killed- would force the police and Gotham to have to deal directly with him, as Dark Knight Returns (and Hush, to a lesser extent) showed.
Besides, it's just plain cool that he doesn't have to kill to deal with opponents.

Exactly. That's what racheted up Batman Begins from super-cool to outright awesome.
"I won't kill you; but I don't have to save you."
Or whatever that line was which made it awesome.

Honestly you could fill this thread with 50 things that were disastrous about the Batman franchise before "Batman Begins" saved it. Nipples on the Batsuit would be the least of my concerns when you had Val Kilmer and George Clooney in the Batsuit. At least nipples on the suit had personality.

So did they get harder when Mr. Freeze was around? I never noticed.

I liked the first two Burton films.
As far as Batman & Robin, the nipples were not the worst thing about it. The utterly terrible script, I think, was somewhat more disastrous.

I would love to have seen the look on the costume designer's face
when Joel Schumacher said, "okay for this film, I want you to add
nipples to the batsuit."
Costumer Designer: WHAT?
Now they're a part of movie history.

Yeah, of all the really horrid things about Batman and Robin, the nipples seem sort of near the bottom.

As much as I like to blame Joel Schumacher for everything from the JFK assassination to global warming, I think it's more likely that the nipples originated with the costume designer.

The nipples were merely a symbol of the general awfulness.

Actually, and this is no cut at Joel, if you know his background and sensibilities,
it's very likely they originated with him. However, even if you're correct and the
Great Nipple Controversy originated with the costume designer, it would be Joel's role,
as director and therefore the boss, to overrule such a bizarre and unnecessary detail. A director is basically a filter for everyone else's ideas from the cast and crew and generally has final say, unless he's working for Jerry Bruckheimer.

Yep. Bat-nipples is just a simple compression of everything bad into three syllables. It's much quicker to say than:
Uma Thurman
Alicia Silverstone
Elle MacPherson
"BANE!!"
They screwed up the backstory/development of every new character except Freeze
The actually nicely done romantic scenes about Freeze and his wife were ruined by continual one-liners
Switching from full-on camp to uber-serious 'character development' and action tends not to work well

It's always perplexed me how Joel Schumacher could make a dark, dangerous, detective story like 8mm, yet he couldn't apply some of the same formulas to his Batman outings.
