So this is another 80's project that's been in the works for awhile- I think the announcement of this film's development preceeds that of the Transformers movie (as well as the ones for Voltron & Thundercats that followed in TF's wake), but it looks like the gears are going into motion on things now.

The producer, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, has apparently confirmed he's immediately jumping into G.I. Joe as soon as things with Transformers wraps up, and it looks like Mark Wahlberg is his first choice to play Conrad "Duke" Hauser.
Latino Review had an earlys cript review up about a year ago. In that draft, the Joes used were: Duke, Scarlett, Snake Eyes, Hi-tech, Heavy Duty & Wild Bill, as well as Generals Hawk & Flagg. The villians were Destro, Baroness & Storm Shadow, as well as the future Cobra Commander (whose backstory has apparently been changed from a used car salesman to a former Joe named "Rex"). And apparently focuses on the formation of Cobra.
Looking forward to this- GI Joe may not have had the deeper mythology that drove the Transformers, but it still had a fun group of characters, and it's various modern incarnations in the comics have been pretty good as well.

I require three things from this movie and three things only:
1) Cobra Commander to scream "COBRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"
2) Never to see Snake Eyes without his mask or hear him speak.
3) Ninja beat-down (a la "Silent Interlude") between Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow with matching I-Ching symbols, preferably silent other than fighting.
Obviously as well, no one should damned well die (other than maybe General Flagg for consistency) which was what pissed me off about Batman films prior to Begins.

It's a shame that Cobra Commander's voice actor has passed away. But it would be good, for 80's nostalgia purposes, but hopefully unlike GI Joe Sigma Six. That isn't a good series.

i'm a huge joe fan, had all the toys and played with them for years!
Although, im not sure how a movie of this will go in a post 911 world. Live action "team america world police" anyone?

I'm not so sure about Marky Mark as Duke, but the plot synopsis sounds pretty cool.

Oooh, will Cobra commander freakishly turn into an actual snake? I remember those well from the cartoon film, that was a weird frightening movie for some little kids.

Awe. Another project that could have greatly benefited from the great Chris Latta. 
The idea does have me slightly interested, and yet not. My excitement will depend on the success of Transformers in terms of quality.
Marky Mark... hmm. I did like him in the Departed, but he's not my favorite actor to say the least. We'll see.

In terms of "G.I. Joe" don't expect that title to stay, but do expect one new character - "Action Man is the equivalent of G.I. Joe internationally pretty much. It's a different character, but pretty much the same idea and his name is Alex Mann. So we're creating a buddy movie between Duke and Alex. That's what we're doing. All the characters will be there and it'll be really fun, but unfortunately our president has put us in a position internationally where it would be very difficult to release a movie called 'G.I. Joe' internationally in a lot of places".
****! Sure, Bush has royally screwed up things internationally, but he's screwed a lot of things up, so what? That shouldn't have any bearing on a movie adapting GI Joe! What's the point of making a GI Joe movie if your not gonna call it GI Joe? You know, the big name property title everyone would recognize? If you want to change the title for international releases, fine, but don't screw with it where you don't have to. ****.
