I remember watching the film version of The Dunwich Horror. I found it scary enough and rather good. It has a 20% rating at rotten tomatoes so it seems a lot of people didn't like it. It has been over 20 years sense I last read the short stories so I think I need to reread them. Most of my memory of his story is over lapped with images from this movie. I also seem to remember there being a iconic song at the beginning of the movie.

The Dunwich Horror
At the bottom of the posted review, there's a warning: "Will not please Lovecraft fans."

tagline: "A few years ago in Dunwich a half-witted girl bore illegitimate twins. One of them was almost human!"
So not only does the "tagline" spoil the twist at the end of the story, but it's not even accurate. Sounds like Lovecraft fans not liking this is an understatement.
I still say that a handful of these stories would transition amazingly well into film if done properly. Not so much the popular Call of Cthulhu, but Whisperer in the Dark, Dunwich Horror, and The Thing on the Doorstep come to mind.

You'd need someone like del Toro or Burton to direct.

They're in the public domain, so... everybody does. It's a surprise they haven't been more heavily used actually.

I was recommended The Call of Cthulu from a geeky friend from 4th grade XP
I haven't gotten around to reading it; I'm discouraged from touching his work because Lovecraft was an outright racist.

As big a horror fan as I am, I've only read the story which Re-Animator is based upon.

If it's in the public domain...maybe the Amph should do a Lovecraft movie.
Who to direct?

If you're a horror fan you really have to check out Lovecraft. All modern horror owes something to him.

From the blog, "Rope of Silicon":
"U also was caught off-guard after they aggressively courted Guillermo Del Toro, the filmmaker behind "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Hellboy." The studio gave him a first-look deal, picked up a sequel to "Hellboy" with a budget of more than $80 million, and even bought the rights to his dream project, the H.P. Lovecraft epic, "At the Mountains of Madness."
But U brass was stunned to suddenly see Del Toro emerge as the likely director of the next two "Hobbit" movies for New Line and MGM. That would lock him down for four straight years in New Zealand.
Langley acknowledges, "We're in discussions with how to rectify that with Guillermo."
Del Toro's dream project; I bet he's not alone, either.

I'm currently reading ATMOM. I'm interested to see where the story goes and how adaptable it will be to a full length feature.

So it appears we'll have to wait quite awhile for ATMOM.
I have since read The Silver Key, which I've learned is part of a cycle of stories. It's very interesting in how it circles around in the life of the protagonist, and I'm seeking out the rest of the stories in the cycle:
* Memory (1919)
* The White Ship (1919)
* The Cats of Ulthar (1920)
* The Doom that Came to Sarnath (1920)
* Celephaïs (1920)
* The Other Gods (1921)
* The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath (1926)
* The Silver Key (1926)
* Through the Gates of the Silver Key (1932-33)

Wow. If the film is anywhere near as creepy, interesting and stylish as the teaser, that movie is going to be awesome.
