I've decided to take this list on.. tongue

Guitar World magazine compiled a list of the 100 greatest guitar solos. I looked through the list, and there's some excellent stuff on it.

100:

song: Three Days
guitarist: Dave Navarro
band: Jane's Addiction
album: Ritual de lo Habitual

This is one of my very favorite Janes Addiction songs. I was lucky enough to see them perform this live at Lolapalooza back in 1990...absolutely amazing.

"This song is such a rush. It's a fevered pitch into headlong headstrong and i can never resist the sheer barely tamed agression of that band propelling live straight through the pounding percussion and soaring guitars; all the religio-hedonistic lyrics make me feel like a love warrior when i listen to it loud enough.
some times when this song comes on, i think, oh no, i'm not ready to listen to this song. it's too powerful for this moment. but i usually always let it play through and it takes whatever moment i'm in and makes it transcendent. it is Jane's Addiction at it's best, everything it ever was and all the kind of raw energy they could ever channel and shoves it through your ears straight down your spine into your quivering ass. it's really quite a song."

-Justin Hall

From an October 2001 AOL chat transcript, a more wizened Perry speaks on this song:

Question: Perry, I read an article many years back... you said if you can't get the meaning of the song in three days, then you happened to experience life. Care to explain what you meant in writing the song?

Perry Farrell: Well, I think that there ought to be a moment or two in one's life that it is they -- as an adult -- taking their party to the limit. And that's quite simply what the story is about, so anyone who couldn't understand the lyrics probably has not taken their party to the limit yet.

I looked for a video for the actual album recording, but only found a live version... which, of course, is much better.

I love Jane's Addiction and "Three Days" as well as "Then She Did..." are two of my favorite songs by them.

I'm actually very surprised that "Three days" actually only made it in at 100. I get the feeling that I'm going to be getting upset at some of the songs that got better favor.

When the solo is revving up, you can almost feel the lights going out, and being replaced by a nervewracking, and almost near orgasmic switch to a room full of constantly ever changing strobes, that roll with the beat.

This song does funny things to me. blush

....and, I'm spent. tongue

This was the song that got me into Jane's in 1991; you could imagine my dismay at being told that they no longer existed. I can't beleive there are 99 solos better than this one because I can't think of more than 2 or 3 off the top of my head

This is a great one to start off with. I spent many a summer evening laying in the grass and listening to this auditory "climax" on my walkman. The high point of a classic album.

I was fortunate enough to see this performed at the first Lollapalooza as well.

I agree, it's a great solo. What I think makes it especially good isn't so much the technical aspects of the solo, but the fact that Jane's Addiction was an alternative hard rock band that was unafraid to use soaring guitar solos in a genre that often disdained the solo as a tool of "corporate" heavy metal and/or arena rock.

Nirvana broke the floodgates of alt-rock into the mainstream, but I'm convinced that JA was the real trailblazer just one year before. Ritual de lo Habitual dropped just as I was entering my senior year of high school in 1990. 80s metal bands still ruled, but I distinctly remember a lot of my metalhead friends listening to this album. A genuine crossover album.

It truly was a crossover album, and I completely agree with what you said about Janes Addiction being the true pioneers as far as bringing alt rock into the mainstream. Don't get me wrong, I like Nirvana a lot, but you were pretty much spot on.

Funny that you mention "Stairway". I'm sure it ranks high on GW's list. Last year (or maybe it was in 2005) VH1 did a four-part series called "Heavy: The History of Heavy Metal". Led Zeppelin is naturally mentioned in the evolution of hard rock, and rock journalist David Fricke from Rolling Stone discussed "Stairway". He mentioned that a big part of "Stairway"'s appeal is that it's a constantly climbing song: the tempo continues to build and build to a climax.

"Three Days" does the exact same thing, especially with the solo. Whether this was intended by the band, I really don't know. But it does add weight to the Jane's-Led Zep comparisons...

song: Cause We've Ended as Lovers
guitarist: Jeff Beck
band: Jeff Beck
album: Blow by Blow

I hadn't heard this one until just now when I looked up the youtube video... really good.

"This song, dedicated to guitarist Roy Buchanan, was composed by longtime friend Stevie Wonder as an apology to Jeff for releasing "Superstition" first. This is what Beck is referring to in the liner notes on the back of the album when he says, "thanks to Stevie." (thanks, bill - San Diego, CA)"

Those both seemed very masturbatory to me. Such solos rarely impress me much. That said I prefered Three Days to Cause We've Ended as Lovers. Beck's solo lacked a flow much of the time. He was often rather quick to mute notes that should have rang out to keep it from sounding choppy. Three Days was a bit long and I'm not a big fan of JA, but still a really solid solo.

At the risk of sounding like a n00b, I'd never heard this song before.

That said, I think this was good, but not quite great. I kinda have to agree with rogue_wookiee: many of the notes Beck was hitting were cut off too abruptly, but I don't play guitar, so I'll freely admit that this could be a greater skill that it sounds. He really loves that tremolo bar.

I'd have to hold my final judgement until I hear the original studio recording of this one.

This is a really good song and the solo is quite impressive. I'm not the biggest Jeff Beck fan, but this whole album is excellent. The soloing is tasteful and interesting without being overindulgent.

Three Days is a good selection too. The solo about fits into the #100 spot, although I'd probably rank the whole song higher on a personal Top 100 Songs list.

This is going to take some time to research.

I'd say I can narrow it down to at least two of the music folders on my computer.

song: Under a Glass Moon
guitarist: John Petrucci
band: Dream Theater
album: Images & Words

"Originally formed as Majesty, the core of DREAM THEATER was mainly John PETRUCCI (guitar), John MYUNG (bass) and Mike PORTNOY (drums). They had their breakthrough on MTV with the song "Pull me Under" of "Images and Words". Former singer Charlie DOMINICI was replaced by James LABRIE.

Their music can be described as progressive metal, taking influences from bands such as METALLICA, QUEENSRYCHE and RUSH. Some pure progressive lovers will find it perhaps too metal, but they have made a lot of epic songs. On the first album with LABRIE "Images and Words", the musicians show impressive abilities on their respective instruments. Good songwriting and also an excellent Kevin MOORE on keyboards.... "

Mmm, sounds so-so to me. plain

I will say it's impressive for a prog rock band. One doesn't normally think of blazing, gymnastic solos like this one in the progressive rock genre. I think my long-ago days as a high school metalhead have left me prejudiced about these kinds of solos: years of listening to wild scales & chords & finger-tapping on the fretboard make it kind of hard for me to be impressed by those tricks anymore. But I confess I've only heard a handful of Dream Theater tracks, so perhaps they've got mellower, more melodic stuff out there that I haven't heard.

Under A Glass Moon is my favorite of John's solos. I learned how to play the whole thing a while back and recorded myself playing it with a jam track, I think I've recorded over it though and doubt I remember how to play it. sad
