And I'll third(?) it. Especially amazing since he was so lame in the first two. The "Spider-Man will pay" at the end of the first movie had me thinking he was just an awful actor, but after three I actually want to see him in more movies.

I just saw City by the Sea. Robert De Niro is a cop who's estranged son (James Franco, so that's for you, Zaz) kills someone in a drugged haze. De Niro tries to find him and get him to turn himself in. George Dzunda is De Niro's partner, Frances McDormand his love interest.
De Niro. Franco. McDormand. And who actually gives a good performance?
Eliza. Freaking. Dushku. She's a junky kicking the habit who's been shacked up with Franco. Franco is absolutely histrionic, De Niro just sleep walks and McDormand is absolutely irritating. But Dushku is brilliant.
I was as surprised as anyone, trust me. Awful movie; great performance and from the least likely cast member.

AnnaSophia Robb in The Reaping. Everyone else was useless, including Swank. The movie was atrocious. But Robb managed to portray a weird/crazy/scared character perfectly in the midst of utter crap. I was shocked

Gary oldman in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Sorry, but they just butchered that movie to death. Which of course was my favorite book in the series...

But POA isn't a bad movie. Quite the contrary. GOF, OTOH, is rotten, but the guy who plays Moody is excellent.

Have you read the book? the movie just doesn't do it justice. I understand that the book is quite big and things have to be cut to fit into a film, but they did really dumb stuff like cut out important information for 10 minutes of stupid, Jamaican-accented shrunken heads that weren't even in the book... Not to mention that the director they hired just didn't seem to care as mush about staying "true" to the original material.
Yeah, GOF has many of the same problems, but I don't cringe as much while watching it. And I agree the guy who played Moody, can't think of his name, was awesome.

I've seen several movies where Morgan Freeman's performances are the only highlight of the film. Can't think of any off the top of my head though.

Too bad this isn't a topic on bad performances in decent movies, cuz I'd nominate Kevin Costner in Robin Hood. Although the other side of the coin is Morgan Freeman was good in Robin Hood, which was a bad movie...
Freeman is one of those great actors who can turn any crap roll into magic. Movies suck in spite of his performance, bot because of. Dude's got one of the greatest voices too. If I had a narrator of my life, I think it'd have to be Morgan Freeman.

Kevin Costner is a good actor who gets knocked simply because he didn't do an accent. Same thing with Keanu Reeves, he gets knocked merely for his voice when he's certainly capable of giving a very good and very nuanced performance.
