I was in a local bookshop looking for the Dan Abnett Torchwood book (which they didn't have) when I noticed some Jane Austen books for £2 each. I've not read any Jane Austen books and I'm tempted to get one or two as they're cheap. Can anyone recommend a good one to start with?

Chronologically, the first one is "Northanger Abbey". This is a satire of the Gothic thrillers of the day. It's a bit rough, and not one of her more popular books, however.

My personal favorite is Pride and Prejudice. I highly recommend Austen's work. Very witty and still very relevant to today's world.

Yeah, Pride & Prejudice is a good place to start. I adored Emma as well, though.

Emma isn't for anyone. Pride and Prejudice is my fave though Mansfield Park is quite good too.

Yes, the 1995 BBC adaptation is an absolute must-see for anyone who enjoyed the book. I enjoyed the 2005 version as well, but the film seemed rushed and some of the characters were a little off. Of course, I've probably been spoiled by the BBC version, which is pretty close to perfect.

I'll second Pride and Prejudice, but I actually thought her best was Sense and Sensibility. Something in that one quite resonated with me, I guess.

Emma is quite a bit more comedic; and Austen remarked that no one would like the main character except her. That said, I quite liked it.

JK Rowling is a great Austen fan, and stated she particularly admired the misdirection of the audience in "Emma" through Emma's POV. Something she's quite good at herself, I note.

If you are going to start with one, "Pride and Prejudice" is probably the most accessible. Unfortunately, since it has been imitated by so many people, both talented and untalented, you may be disappointed.

I enjoyed Sense and Sensibility, but I don't know that I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't already love Austen. My qualms with S&S are firstly, Marianne's bedridden state through most of the novel. I have a pet peeve of heroines falling sick over a broken heart, though Austen makes it somewhat tolerable to read. Secondly, I wanted Eleanor to end up with Col. Brandon. They were so well suited to each other. Oh well. That being said, S&S really was a pleasure to read and many times I couldn't put it down. So yeah, thumbs up from me.

Has anyone seen the movie, by the way? Is it any good?

Haha, I'd read that somewhere as well, and I think one of the things I liked most about Emma was that she was a flawed character. There's something wonderfully romantic about Mr. Knightley being the one man who will put up with her and at the same time tell it to her like it is. tongue

The "Sense & Sensibility" movie is excellent, and Rickman is very good in a first-rate cast.

Yeah, the cast looks great (Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet, if I recall), but I'm always wary about adaptations. I think I'll add it to my netflix queue, though. Thanks!

It's brilliant. Thompson and Winslet are both perfectly cast and Alan Rickman exceeds expectations.

And Hugh Laurie is a riot in a small supporting role.

Great film for sure.

There are a couple adaptations of Emma...one starring Paltrow, which I haven't seen.

There are many, many adaptations of "Pride and Prejudice". One stars Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson (he's right, she isn't). The best is probably the BBC adaptation with Colin Firth as Darcy. The Elizabeth in that one is not quite right, though.

The Paltrow one is okay. I mean, I liked it, but it definitely didn't do the novel justice (then again, it's a rare film that does).

I loved the Keira Knightley P&P, but then again I adore her and I thought Matthew McUnspellable-name made a great Mr. Darcy too. Heck, I also really liked Bride & Prejudice - a bit campy, but lots of fun.

I've been meaning to watch the BBC P&P forever now, but I do have it on my netflix queue and by the end of the summer I WILL have seen it. I'm determined haha.
