SPOILER WARNING!!!!! THE ENDING WILL BE REVEALED TO EVERY MOVIE WE DISCUSS!!!!!

As I was watching Planet of the Apes (on the History Channel), I got the idea for this thread:

The twist ending is one of the best ways to end a film. Some of them are good, and some are bad. Here we are to discuss the best twist endings in the history of film:

"Planet of the Apes (1968)"

Throughout the entire film, we are led to believe that Taylor (played by Charlton Heston) has crash landed on another planet that is ruled by apes. When he finally escapes them, he finds a half-sunken Statue of Liberty in the sand. Realizing that he is on a future Earth, and that mankind has destroyed itself, Taylor loses all hope for survival.

Absolutely amazing twist. Pierre Boulle (writer of the novel) would later go on to say that he wished he had thought of Rod Serling's (of Twilight Zone fame) ending.

Discuss.

Oh, yes, this twist makes the movie.

Heh...I just saw the same showing of PotApes tonight, too.

I have mixed feelings on the film, leaning towards the negative, but the ending is a real emotional and plot kicker that doesn't let down, even with repeat viewings. I think that the reduced sound and minimalist nature of the scene don't do the movie justice as a closing. The way the scene was framed and set up, it would have been more appropriate for a television series than it was to the end of a feature-length film with the aspirations of Apes.

As a story twist, and looking at it with an emotional eye, I give it a thumbs-up. From a production standpoint, I don't think the scene delivers and is a cinematic let-down as the conclusion to this film.

I sort of agree, the cinematography and music could have been better, but just the actual story and writing of it is ingenious.

I honestly didn't see it coming when I first watched the movie. Really great ending, far superior to that crap fest that Tim Burton made.

It's been some time since I've seen this one, but I loved the ending to this. Not real thrilled that they kept making them though, as the quality just kept going south.

This is a great idea for a thread. I love films with unexpected endings.

Whatever idiot put the statue of liberty on the box needs taking out back and shooting. That would be like projecting Bruce Willis as a ghost onto the front of the Sixth Sense DVD.

Or putting a rotting corpse of Mustafa on the Lion King cover... actually that'd be pretty cool.

The music could be better? Sacrilege! Goldsmith's score is not just one of the greatest of film history, it's one of the most significant in terms of depth and technique to sell a sci-fi story.

Regards the movie as a whole, I love the ending; Boulle's novel has a twist as well, but it's idiotic. Burton's has yet another twist and it's even more idiotic (and entirely illogical; the entire movie breaks down if you buy Burton's twist).

But the original . . . wow.

There are few moments as impassioned as Heston's blistering speech at the end.

It is a good score. But if I recall correctly, there is no music during the big reveal scene.

I wonder if the ending of POTA-'68 could have been inspired by a Twilight Zone episode called "I shot an arrow into the air",the one about the three astronauts whose rocket crash-lands on what they think to be an asteroid but ends up being the Nevada desert.
