OBI-BEN-KENOBI posted: There's not going to be another Caddyshack for Bill Murray. Nor will there be another ghostbusters, or even another groundhog day. But that doesn't mean he should just give up on quality comedy and rake in cash from crap. Plenty of comedians of his age and older have taken smaller roles in good films and gained respect for it.
But Bill Murray is like the archetypal example of a comedy actor getting older, taking smaller roles in good films and gaining respect for it (even if I think his stonefaced non-acting for his 'serious' roles has gotten a bit old by this point). phoning in vocals for a couple of duff kids movies for cash doesn't change that. I don't begrudge the man from wanting to make a bit of money once in a while. Wait to see what choices he makes once he comes back from his career break. Writing off his credibility for good strikes me as knee-jerk 'sell-out' snobbery more then anything.

He's coming back? I thought he was going to stick to writing for a while.

No. 23: Marlon Brando in "Superman"(1978)
"Okay, this movie's actually pretty respectable. If only the same could be said for the Method meatball's reason for signing on as Superman's baby daddy, Jor-El. Brando, who was never shy about his desire for big paydays in exchange for mininal work, shook down the producers for a payday of approximately $14 Million for 13 days on the set. That translates to 1.2 Million per minute of screen time."
And to add insult to injury, he's campy.

14 million? I thought it was only 3 million. Is that figure adjusted for inflation?
Here's a quote I found at http://superman.ws/fos/themovie/brando.php
"I had only a small part in Superman, but since it was a popular movie and my contract gave me 11.3 percent of the gross, I made about $14 million for less than three weeks' work. When Alexander and Ilya Salkind, the producers, asked if they could use footage from the picture in a sequel, Superman II, I asked for my usual percentage, but they refused, and so did I." - Marlon Brando

In 1977 George Lucas created the Star Wars Trilogy and changed the way we look at movies. In 1999 George Lucas created the Prequel Trilogy and changed the way we look at Star Wars. Frasier, Lost, and Whose Line Is It Anyway? are the best tv shows ever.

Brando as Jor-El is brilliant. I love him in the role, and don't care how much he was paid.

Yeah, Brando was perfect in the role. Just because a director and producer pay him a retarded amount of money doesn't mean he ONLY took the role for money. Not Brando's fault the producer/director were too cheap to pay him for pt 2.
Brando as Jor-El is perfect. Watch the recut Supes 2 and Returns and see his brilliance.

Brando was brilliant in Superman. If you want proof compare the two cuts of Superman 2. Every scene that Donner put back with Brando added a new wonderful layer and immediately reminded you of everything you love about Superman, electrifying the film until his next scene. I never liked Superman 2 until I saw the Donner cut, because I always felt that something was missing. I thought it was Donner himself, but part of it was the lack of Brando to carry wisdom needed to lift a vulnerable and, at times, broken hero.
If thats not your cup of tea, watch the teaser for Superman Returns. While you may not have enjoyed the film, it brings a small tear to my eye each time I hear Brando's speech to his son about his purpose and role, combined beautifully with stark imagery and the subtle yet familiar score by John Williams. It is possibly my favorite Teaser ever.
"They are a good people Kal El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all else, I have sent them you...my only son."

He made a dreadful mistake with "The Godfather". In dire need of money, he exchanged his cut of the profits for $100,000

Shameless? I wouldn't say so,Brando really did enjoy the role. In fact I'd say his pay was fair in the long run, his top billing on the other hand...

Brando was a genius, yes. And he trashed his genius in the most irritating way imaginable in role after role, both before and after this movie.

Brando was great in the movie, but just because he was great doesn't mean it wasn't a shameless grab for cash. His paycheck wasn't precisely the most humble aspect of his work.

If he enjoyed and respected the role, the film makers respected him and audiences appreciated what he did, how was it shameless? If he earned that paycheck no matter how small the role was (enough for three movies isn't exactly small) I fail to see how it was shameless.
