Oh man. This movie sucks on so many levels. You could write a book of the crap Affleck has done, but this one is topped off as John Woo's tour de force o'crap. This is the most hideous thing he has directed.

I don't know how this is a paycheck grabbing role for Affleck. This was a legitimate attempt at action hero status & like every other genre he's tried, Affleck failed miserably. I hope more people see this so that Affleck's presence never touches celluloid again. BTW Uma Thurman deserves scorn for this as well.

Yeah, I'd say this one is more paycheck grabbing for Uma Thurman, then Ben Affleck.

I saw this movie today on TBS. Awful.
Paul Giamatti was in it too.

The premise of Paycheck is great, the execution, from script to casting, is awful. Affleck looks so smug in the establishing shot that introduces him that I immediately wanted to hit him. Woo should have been able to do better than this.

So, were any of the actors in Batman & robin well paid? Because if so, they need to go on this list. well, except Schwarzenegger. All of his roles are basically this crappy.

I'm not going to lie. If I were a movie star and were offered a John Woo-directed Philip K. Dick story, I would take it ... regardless of money.

"17. Buster Keaton in Beach Blanket Bingo
(1965) During the silent era, Keaton was arguably a greater comedic talent than Charlie Chaplin. But the introduction of sound made him obsolete. By the LBJ years, this genius was reduced to taking any fluff film that would have him in exchange for a payday. Take this Annette Funicello-Frankie Avalon hormone-apalooza, which features Keaton wearing his signature porkpie hat and deadpan expression. Well, his expression is deadpan at least until a bombshell in a bikini crosses his path. Then his eyes bug out like the world's oldest living horndog. Ah-ooo-gah! How depressing."
Considering that Keaton was a genius, it *is* depressing.

Keaton should have survived the coming of sound. What he didn't know was that he would be screwed over by his brother in law Joe Schenck. Against the advice of Charlie Chaplin he gave up his independence & signed with MGM. They had no idea what to do with him and teamed him with Jimmy Durante in several unfunny films. Keaton then began to drink and his days as a leading man were over. He spent time writing gags for the Three Stooges and the Marx Brothers. He divorced, declared bankruptcy and was sued by the IRS. In 1949 critic James Agee wrote an article on the silent film stars and Keaton's films were rediscovered. From the 50s on he got work in bit parts and made more money than when he was a major star.
It's sad that he never had the chance to make his kind of film once he got to MGM. Part of the reason may be in something the head of MGM Nicholas Schenck, Joe's brother, said at the time. "I don't like slapstick"

Chaplin *did* survive sound, and it was for exactly the reason you mention.
Oddly, Keaton was probably happy to be working; he enjoyed it.

But it sounds like Keaton really needed the paycheck-grabbing role in this case. I was under the impression that most of the names on this list would be folks who weren't washed-up or in dire need of said payday-roles, yet took them anyway just to make a quick buck. It would seem to me that it's more shameful for a performer to take on this kind of role when they don't need to, i.e. Jason Alexander in "Dunston Checks In" when Seinfeld is at the height of its popularity.

You have a point; if he needs to eat, it doesn't merit "shameless."

"16. Jeremy Irons and John Malkovich in Eragon
(2006) This one's a twofer. Maybe Irons is a closet nerd with a thing for fire-breathing flops. After all, he also starred in 2000's Dungeons & Dragons. But what's Malkovich's excuse? Between the Sam Shepard plays and the artfully cocked beret he likes to wear while combing used-book stores on the Left Bank, we kind of assumed he was, well, too much of a snob for this stuff."

"15. Christopher Walken in Kangaroo Jack
(2003) Sure, the guy works with directors like Spielberg and Tarantino, but he's also made so many clunkers, it's hard to pick the worst. The Country Bears? Joe Dirt? Gigli? Tough call, but in the end we went with this Bruckheimer crap confection because he costars with a badly animated marsupial who wears shades and sings ''Rappers Delight.'' This guy needs an intervention. He may be the least selective actor alive."
