Joe Dirt wasn't that bad.

I read where one critic said that Walken had basically become a 'Walken impersonater' which I thought clever, funny and absolutely on the nose.

That said, he still has the talent; I think his work in Catch Me If You Can is close to the best work of his entire career.

I agree. He's very good in that film. But about 90% of what he does is paycheck grabbing. He's essentially become that guy who's always tacked into small roles in dumb films to try to get all those young people who love Christopher Walken to go see the crappy movie- "Oh, but Christopher Walken's in it! So at least that'll be funny..."

I can't decide whether it's sad or just annoying. But it kind of amazes me that the same ploy works over and over...

Yeah, it's weird with Walken because he seems to be doing the reverse of the norm. It's usually when someone starts to make it big, but you know what to expect. You knew what to expect with a Will Ferrell, early Jim Carrey, or early Adam Sandler film, but eventually they tried to expand their niche and do different things. With Walken, he could be a wide-ranging actor when he wanted, but as was so nicely put, his range has seemed to shrink and now he gets by playing himself.

"14. Richard Pryor in Superman III
(1983) Pryor deservedly gets a lot of praise for his no-holds-barred stand-up comedy, but in the early '80s he was like a heat-seeking missile of bad instincts. No, we're not talking about the freebasing. We're talking about movies like The Toy, Brewster's Millions, and this unfortunate chapter in the squeaky-clean Man of Steel saga, which renders the once proudly profane Pryor hamstrung and neutered."

This *is* embarrassing, no question. But "The Toy" is worse.

Richard Pryor's career died in the 80's, he didn't have the shock value he had in the 70's and his collaborations with Gene Wilder became too few and far between.

Superman III is not a total washout. Chris Reeves is good, especially during the junkyard fight between Clark Kent and Evil Superman, plus Annette O'Toole is hot as Lana Lang. I have a love hate relationship with this film. Sometimes I love it and sometimes I hate it. When I'm in a silly mood I'm more forgiving and actually enjoy Pryor's presence. However I know he has no business being there in the first place.

"13. Faye Dunaway in Supergirl
(1984) Peter O'Toole is lousy in this too, but at least he disappears for most of the film (no doubt to head to the bank). Dunaway, on the other hand, is trapped for the entire nightmare, hamming it up like Cruella De Vil on a laughing-gas jag. Dunaway (who, it should be noted, is also in Dunston Checks In) plays a harpy fond of kimonos and world domination...and not nearly as fond of Helen Slater's Supergirl."

Never seen this one...luckily.

I'm noticing a recurring Super-movie theme.

This one wasn't shameless in the least. They tried (and horrendously failed) to launch a Supergirl franchise kinda in the middle of the Superman one. Marlon Brando, et al were all in the Superman films so... WTH?

Sure, the movie was laughably bad in most cases but that doesn't mean it wasn't a good attempt or that this was shameless at the time. Not to mention, I actually kinda liked Faye Dunaway in the film BECAUSE she was so campy... tongue

Peter Cook's presence in Supergirl, now that was a paycheck grab.

Ben Kingsley in Uwe Boll's "Bloodrayne" strikes me a prime example of paychech grabbing at it's worst.
It sure was not because of Boll's critical reputation.

"12. William Hurt in "Lost in Space"

(1998) Here's a guy who seems to get Oscar noms just for waking up in the morning looking lost. Hurt must have taken a gander around Hollywood and seen his peers buying up Aston Martins and wondered, ''What the hell am I doing playing imprisoned transvestites in art films? I could be stinkin' rich!'' Unfortunately, he winds up looking stiffer than the movie's robot. I swear you can see the self-loathing creep across his face."
