I love Toy Story. Great message about Friendship.
Someone mentioned "Sid" above...we remind my son: Not to be a "Sid" whenever he gets especially wild with his toys.

Book: It's not about… making sense.
It's about believing in something.
And letting that belief be real enough to change your life.
It's about faith.
You don't fix faith, River. It fixes you.

Next up...
98. Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942)
Principal Cast
: James Cagney, Joan Leslie, Walter Huston
Director
: Michael Curtiz
Position 10 years ago
: 100 (+2)
Plot Synopsis
: A semi-biographical film about the musical composer, playwright, actor, dancer, and singer, George M. Cohan.
My Take
: I haven’t seen it all the way through, but it is one of the all-time great musicals. “Yankee Doodle Boy”, “Grand Old Flag”, “Give My Regards to Broadway”, “Over There”… Probably worth including.

I never enjoyed musicals, and consequently have never seen this.

RE: AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movies (10th Anniversary Edition) 98. "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (1943)
Very appropriate for the 4th of July!
This was 100th in the first list, and I fully expected it to fall off it. Instead, it rose two points--very interesting.
It's an old Warners B & W patriotic musical...the life of composer, singer and Broadway star George M. Cohan, who wrote a number of famous songs: "It's a Grand Old Flag", "Over There", etc. etc.
What raises it above the ordinary is the year (1943) and James Cagney's performance. This movie is very hokey at times, but Cagney is terrific; he has energy to burn. Though he is known for gangster parts in the movies, he began as a hoofer and a female inpersonator on the stage. His stiff-legged strut is nothing like Astaire or Kelly, but it has a charm all its own. He won Best Actor for this movie, though it isn't (quite) his best performance. The sentiment is there, but it often hits the right note--as in the scene where Cohan marches with some soldiers going off to WWII, and they ask him if he knows the words to "Over There." And there's a riveting excerpt from Cohan's last show, "I'd Rather Be Right" (in which he plays FDR).
Its placement surprises me, but elements of this film are iconic.

I was going to post this tomorrow, but I'll put it up a little early.
97. Blade Runner (1982)
Principal Cast
: Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, Daryl Hannah
Director
: Ridley Scott
Position 10 years ago
: N/A
Plot Synopsis
: Loosely based on the Philip K. Dick novel
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
, the story of a police man in 2019 Los Angeles hunting down 4 replicants, human clones with fixed lifespans. Replicants are illegal and all targeted for termination by these “blade runners.”
My Take
: A touchstone for neo-noir and cyberpunk. I haven’t seen it, but I know I should. Its influence on those sub-genres, and its philosophical/moral implications still have impact today.

Haven't seen this one either (waiting for the (rumored) theatrical re-release), but Rutger Hauer is an awesome actor.

No movie with Sean Young and Darryl Hannah in it would make *my* top ten, just saying.

OK, next up is another one new to the list.
96. Do the Right Thing (1989)
Principal Cast
: Ossie Davis, Danny Aiello, Giancarlo Esposito, Richard Edson, Spike Lee, Ruby Dee, Bill Nunn, John Turturro, Rosie Perez
Director
: Spike Lee
Position 10 Years Ago
: N/A
Plot Synopsis
: It's the hottest day of the year in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, and tensions are growing there, with the only local businesses being a Korean grocery and Sal's Pizzeria. Mookie, Sal's delivery boy, manages to always be at the center of the action. (imdb)
My Take
: I've never seen it. It
is
good/lucky enough to have a 100% rating at rottentomatoes.

The only two Spike Lee joints I've seen are Inside Man and the 25th Hour. I might look into seeing this one as well.

It might be interesting to note, when you put up a film on this list that wasn't on the last one, a film that it displaced, so we see what got kicked off as well. If you want. Just an idea.
Yankee Doodle Dandy I too expected to fall off the list. I think I'd agree with that more than bumping it up too, though it is a great film. Cagney's dancing style is unique, but brilliant.
Blade Runner is an outstanding film; it made the AFI's Thrillers list, so I wasn't too surprised to see it here (a lot of the additions on this list made the AFI's other lists: comedies, thrillers, love stories, etc).
Hauer's performance is one of the great villainous performances of all time and the film just has its own beautiful aesthetic. Sean Young is gorgeous and, like Ford, her robotic acting works well.

I would have been willing to bet that "Yankee Doodle Dandy" would no longer be on the list...maybe it's because the USA is now at war?
