93. French Connection - Meh. I guess I just wasn't much of a Popeye Doyle fan. The chase was alright, and the movie overall was good though.
92. Goodfellas - Classic. A bit overplayed on television, but still an awesome film. This film should have won more awards. Great use of music in the film too.

I think Goodfellas is a masterpiece that just gets better with time. It is very high up on my favorite movies of all-time list.

I like GoodFellas more than The Godfather.

91. Sophie's Choice (1982)
Principal Cast
: Meryl Streep, Kevin Cline, and Peter MacNicol
Director
: Alan J. Pakula
Position 10 Years Ago
: N/A
Previous 91
: My Fair Lady (1964)
Plot Synopsis
: The story of a beautiful Polish immigrant, Sophie, and her tempestuous lover who share a boarding house with a young writer in Brooklyn (wikipedia)
My Take
: It's interesting to note that it effectively bumps "My Fair Lady" off the list. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

"My Fair Lady" is an extremely artifical movie, but it still has more art than "Sophie's Choice" which is the sort of tedious 'serious' movie designed for Oscar consideration and no other purpose, much.

Zaz, "Oscar bait" was my exact take on it as I read about it, but I didn't mention that in my post for whatever reason (forgetfulness and stupidity are the heavy favorites).

Sophie's Choice was a pretty good film actually. Knowing nothing about it when I first saw it, I wasn't expecting it to be so depressing. Especially the last time she sees her children.
It deserves the praise it gets.

It has a serious and painful subject, but it is not particularly suited to a movie adaptation, nor particularly well made, paced, or conceived. IMO.

RE: AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movies (10th Anniversary Edition) 91. "Sophie's Choice"
I saw Sophie's Choice after reading the book which may have hampered me. The book was by turns as bleak/depressing as a book can get and hilariously raunchy, a balance that rather amazed me. It's a brilliant novel.
The film simplifies things down to the bare bones and casts that dude from Ghostbusters II as the audience surrogate. Et tu, Brute? Streep is rather miscast, I'm afraid. Kevin Kline was the best thing in the film; he seemed to really understand that the movie needed to be darker than it was. Sadly, no one else would follow him down that road.
My Fair Lady is a better film and I'm not one of those people who says My Fair Lady is even that great. But it is better than Sophie's Choice. I have not a clue why this one made the list.

Alright, time for another new addition to the list...
90. Swing Time (1936)
Principal Cast
: Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers
Director
: George Stevens
Position 10 Years Ago
: n/a
Previous 90
: The Jazz Singer (1927) - Off
Plot Synopsis
: John "Lucky" Garnett (Fred Astaire) is a gambler and dancer who, after showing up late for his wedding to Margaret (Betty Furness), is told by her father that he must earn $25,000 in order to demonstrate his good intentions. He hitches the first freight train to New York, where he meets Penny (Ginger Rogers), a dance school instructor, and immediately falls in love with her. They prove successful together in the casino and on the dance floor. (wikipedia)
My Take
: I'm going to say no. While Swing Time is certainly an accomplishment in its genre, I don't think AFI should have taken off the first feature-length film to use synchronized dialogue. The advent of talkies has a lot more "cultural impact" and "historical significance"; The Jazz Singer deserves a spot somewhere on the list IMHO.

Wow, the only movie on the list that I saw so far was Toy Story. It was the movie I saw a million times as a kid. I hadn't seen it in 2 years, saw it again, and had every line memorized. Also, Cars is not the worst Pixar movie, Ratatouille is (except for the old lady with the shotgun and the begginning short, with the Will Helm scream)

This is quite interesting..."Swing Time" is rated the best Rogers/Astaire, and it's very good (though I prefer both "Top Hat" and "Follow the Fleet") and has probably the best director. "The Jazz Singer" is a historic movie, but it's utter drek otherwise, and go with the better movie, say I.

I agree with Zaz. THE JAZZ SINGER, while important historically, is neither the highpoint of early American talkies nor of Hollywood musicals (let alone early American-talkie Hollywood musicals, phew). SWING TIME is a fine, albeit boring replacement, a good film, but not nearly as good as the sublime Rogers-Astaire collaboration TOP HAT.
Still, I am continuously baffled by AFI's reluctance to give credit to the great Busby Berkeley. GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933 is an easy choice.

They're both great. Neither Lloyd Bacon nor Mervyn Le Roy were geniuses, but Gold Diggers is just a little more likeable from my view. Again though, they're both great, and both belong on this kind of list.
