Article from Star Trek.com
So have you seen "Transformers" yet? If so, did you catch the mysterious trailer that ran before it? It was the one showing a going-away party in New York shot on home video, when suddenly a loud roar shakes the city. The partiers head to the roof of the building to see a massive explosion on the horizon, and then flaming debris starts flying into the streets, including the head of the Statue of Liberty ... all of it shot "Blair Witch" style. And then we learn it's a J.J. Abrams movie premiering January 18, 2008 ... and there's no title!
The Hollywood trade papers talked about it this morning, and though they are mostly in the dark about it too, they did reveal a few details about the project apparently code-named "Cloverfield." The movie — whatever its real title is going to be — revolves around a monster attack in New York as told from the point of view of a small group of people. It is being directed by Matt Reeves, who co-created Felicity with Abrams, and is written by Drew Goddard, who has worked with Abrams on Lost and Alias. Bryan Burk, who is producing "Star Trek XI" with Abrams, is also producing "Cloverfield." The cast includes Michael Stahl-David, who worked with Kate Mulgrew on The Black Donnellys.
"Paramount greenlighted the project under a veil of heavy secrecy in February, about the same time that Abrams agreed to the take over the directing reins of the new 'Star Trek' film," states a front-page story in The Hollywood Reporter. "The movie, which is believed to have a relatively modest budget of about $30 million, began shooting in mid-June in New York. With 'Transformers' generating huge tracking numbers in the weeks before its release, the studio decided to put footage from 'Cloverfield' in a teaser in front of 'Transformers' to build buzz." Apparently the movie is still shooting in New York presently.
Daily Variety reports that a staffer at Bad Robot, Abrams' production company (located in Santa Monica near the "Cloverfield" exit from the I-10 — coincidence?) "feigned ignorance" about the trailer.
I must go see Transformers now. This sounds better than the movie itself.

I saw this discussion in the Transformers thread, and I decided it needed its own thread.

Is the trailer online?
Here is the "Official" site: 1-18-08
Abrams has said that they made this site and it is the only one they have made that has been found.

From what I gather around TFN it's probably another Godzilla.

I REALLY hope it isn't another Godzilla. I want something original.
I wish the release date were sooner, its really risky to hope the hype will last over seven months.

So that leaves the question, what exactly is JJ Abrams doing with this movie?
By the way, the trailer was better then the Transoformers movie.

Maybe the same thing Spielberg did with Transformers??
That way, if it bombs, he didn't direct it, and if it's a hit, his name's still on it.

Yeah, this trailer was honestly better than the film.
I hope this is another Godzilla. It's not like the first one was a masterpiece of cinema or anything.

I'm sure J.J Abrams does alot better with something with a fixed timetable as opposed to his TV shows which spiral out of control. I thought the trailer was cool, but I'm not going crazy over it like some people. There's not much to speculate about at this point. We all saw the same thing. How many times can you argue over one line of dialogue?

I love all of J.J. Abrams' projects. This could very well turn into a huge hype fest. I hope the title isn't released until the full trailer or something. I think that is awesome that a movie of that caliber (especially if it is a Godzilla movie) could get green lighted and filmed without anyone knowing until now. Abrams is a master at this type stuff, I only wish he was directing.
Needless to say, I'm stoked.

This is a post I found from a member of a separate forum:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/January_18
Decided to check out the date on a whim and found some interesting references. Notably:
512 - Anastasius Balkin Zeno is brutally murdered after predicting the Apocalypse will occur on this date in 2008.
1916 - A 611 gram chondrite type meteorite struck a house near the village of Baxter in Stone County, Missouri.
1939 - Louis Armstrong first LP recording of "Jeepers Creepers" (after one movie and one radio version).
1964 - Plans are revealed for the World Trade Center in New York City.
1994 - The Cando event, a possible bolide impact in Cando, Spain. Witnesses claim to have seen a fireball in the sky lasting for almost one minute.
2000 - The strange Tagish Lake meteorite impacted the Earth.
2007 - The strongest storm in the UK for 17 years kills 14 people, Germany sees the worst storm since 1999 with 13 deaths. Hurricane Kyrill, caused at least 44 deaths across 20 countries in Western Europe. Other losses include the Container Ship MSC Napoli destroyed by the storm of the coast of Devon, England.
The Cando event is itself related to a similar incident, albeit on a far larger scale, that is described here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunguska_Event
For those too lazy to click a link, the last one describes an incident in Russia in 1908 involving an asteroid impacting the earth, causing an explosion comparable to about 20 tons of TNT, which would be 1000 times greater than the atomic bomb at Hiroshima. More important though, is this line:
The Tunguska event is the largest impact event in recent history. An explosion of this magnitude had the potential to devastate large metropolitan areas should it occur over a large city.
I'm starting to think this is going to be an alien invasion type thing. Pure and utter speculation of course, but we never do see what causes that massive explosion shown in the trailer.
There's also that whole reference to an apocalypse prophecy to consider.

I thought this looked like it could be the return of The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. That would be awesome.
