At the end you can hear static then a whisper, "Help Us", when played backwards sounds like, "It's Still Alive".

The Coney Island scene is dated exactly one month before the attack, too.

This movie rocked my socks off.

'I was just thinking how scary it would be if a flaming homeless guy came at us right now.'

Just the right amount of humor, intense, realistic (relatively)- I was totally sucked in. My only gripe was that Beth was pretty annoying. The scene where they push her free of the metal rod that was in her shoulder still had me feeling bad for her, though. That scene was very well done. The kicking, the begging...

I couldn't help but think all during the first two-thirds of the film how much the girls' feet must be hurting, though. I was very relieved when I saw Lily holding her shoes in the stairwell.

Never before have so many Americans suffered so much motion sickness in such a short period of time for such a short movie. Not since Blair Witch.

Just got back from seeing it for the third time and four people ran out of the theater about an hour in.

Still, not the slightest hint of nausea for me, yea!

I didn't notice anybody leave the theater at my screening- then again, I don't recall anyone leaving during Blair WItch either, though I would imagine Blair Witch would have been much worse in terms of motion sickness inducing, as Cloverfield's camerawork is actually rather smooth and well-blocked after Hud gets the hang of things (generally from the moemnt they leave the party building is when it smooths out). It's shaky, but it's not erradic. The camerawork in general is pretty brilliant, really- it lingers just long enough appropriate to the moment and the info you as the audience need to absorb, while still being raw in presentation.

"All hand held footage, though, right?"

Yea, everything. It works, too. It gives it a more realistic feel.

But kind of pointless when it makes you motion sick, as it does me. No matter how good this really is, I'll have to pass. Too bad. I think I would have liked it.

Unfortunately, the movie probably wouldn't have worked as effectively if it wasn't all hand-held footage.

I think movie watchers can be divided into two categories: Those who want an explanation for what is driving the plot, and those who aren't concerned with why the plot is happening.

Take a movie called The Trigger Effect for example. It's about how people react when the power goes out city wide for an extended period of time. We never find out why the power was out, and for me it doesn't matter. Yet, a friend of mine didn't like the movie simply because he never knew why the power went out.

You just hit the nail right on the head.

In fact, almost all movies fall prey to these two types of watchers, and, at times, I think most of us, if informed ahead of time, can enjoy a film for what it is intended to be.
Life, in general, is about preconceived notions and/or expectations.
Sometimes, movies require additional viewings once the makers' intentions are discovered which can lead one to start appreciating a particular work, and, maybe, even like it.
An example, for me, is Attack of the Clones. I really did not like this film, at first, but after understanding Lucas' intent for the whole series and the type of character that pre-Vader Anakin was supposed to be, I began to appreciate and, even, perceive Hayden's acting as a little bit more appropriate than once thought. I try to remember that he is basically a older child who thinks that his overly dramatic presentation will win her over. It's not so much that the actor is overacting, but that the character is overacting. It actually reveals a somewhat inherently immature and deceptive nature when Anakin wants something, but isn't getting the result he wants.

I'm the kind of person who has to know where the monster came from, but only because I loved the movie so much I want to get any info I can on it. If I ended up not liking the movie, I wouldn't really care.

Kinda like I wasn't too concerned about the details of the virus in I Am Legend because I didn't enjoy it that much. (Will Smith was awesome though.)

So I don't really know if I want a sequel or not, but the DVD better be full of stuff. tongue

I saw this on Saturday. I fall into the not worrying about why something is happening category because I'd read the spoilers and still had fun. I would say this was a good movie going experience. Only a few things sort of stuck out, but I managed to overlook it. Thought the head of lady liberty was too small and the bombs should have had some effect on the monster. The camera was on at times it probably wouldn't been in reality but then we wouldn't have gotten to see everything we wanted so I justified that to myself. I didn't find it that dizzying at all and got used to it fairly quickly.

I'd give it a good solid B. happy

I absolutely hated it.

The weird thing was, 3/4ths through I thought it was the best movie in the history of this earth. But when it ended, there were so many loose ends and plotholes that I was just entirerly horrified that this movie had recieved such good reviews. If you are a moviegoer who likes seeing this like BIG EXPLOSIONS, DEATHS, ZOMG SPECIAL FX then see this.

As I've posted in a couple other threads already, I really didn't like it when I first came out of the theater on Thursday night. But then after letting it sink in for a couple of hours, I realized it was absolutely genius. I really like it now. cool

I think this is what happened to me. I went in expecting to see a more traditional type movie. So, I was disappointed at first. But then, when I could realize what the filmmakers intentions were, I liked it alot more.

"(FROM VARIETY) – Matt Reeves, director of the J.J. Abrams-produced Cloverfield, is in talks with Paramount to helm a sequel. On a $25 million budget, using a cast of unknowns, Cloverfield scored a $46 million opening weekend, setting a record for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Reeves has also cut a deal with GreeneStreet Films to direct The Invisible Woman, a thriller about a beauty queen-turned-criminal he wrote and will produce with Abrams. If Paramount can quickly work out a deal for a sequel with Reeves, Abrams, and Cloverfield writer Drew Goddard, the director would likely make that his next project and begin Invisible Woman afterward.
