MUST WATCH OF THE WEEK
"Mad Men" A

"Last week's revelation that Don Draper (Jon Hamm) stole his identity from a dead war buddy was — like so much about Mad Men — just the right kind of shocking. Tonight, yet another of his secrets gets out, sending poor wife Betty (January Jones) into her umpteenth emotional tailspin. Since its fizzy premiere, this discomfiting period drama has grown more engrossing as it tackles gender roles, marital non-bliss, homophobia, anti-Semitism, and a host of other messy social ills. It takes talent to pull that off in an inaugural season, and that's what makes Mad Men such an easy show to love. It gets everything right. — Nicholas Fonseca"

SEASON FINALE

"Damages"

"Why was Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) framed for murder? How will the legal maneuvering between virtuous(?) litigator Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) and corrupt(?) CEO Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson) be resolved? And most importantly, are you still with me — or the show, for that matter? Judging by the ratings, only a few of you stuck around. That's too bad. At its worst, Damages was a maddeningly over-ambitious thriller, but the cast — Danson, Close, and Željko Ivanek (a nuanced character actor with an indelible face) — served up some of the best acting on TV all year. Here's hoping that Emmy voters won't shun the series too." —Henry Goldblatt

Mmm, I liked the finale. They really lead you in the wrong direction in the previous episode before throwing yet another curveball at you.

SEASON FINALE

"Survivor: China"

"A fake hidden immunity idol is played. Two real hidden immunity idols are not. A mulleted lunch lady from Massachusetts does kung fu in the Shaolin Temple. Those are just a few of the more bizarre scenes from this season of Survivor: China. But the real million-dollar moment occurs this Sunday when the show's 15th winner is crowned. Our money (which has considerably fewer zeros behind it) is on either Todd, the gay Mormon flight attendant whose strategy constantly changes based on his panic level du jour, or Amanda, who's also in the running to become Survivor's most pixilated contestant ever. Best of luck to her on both counts. —Dalton Ross"

According to recent reports from Variety and other sources, NBC really wants to keep the show around for a third season, so they're trying to partner with another network to do something similar to what they did for Criminal Intent this season. Personally I think that's brilliant. The audience it has will follow it to any channel, and its numbers would look more respectable on cable. I'm really glad they're trying to be smart about how to keep it alive.

As to this episode... it was a good one, but considering no one involved knew it would be the last episode of the season, I think you can hardly judge it as such. It sure left off in a bad place as far as cliffhangers go, with Street possibly becoming a father. The early-middle part of this season was mediocre, but it had just picked up really well in the last few episodes. It's a shame that momentum has to slow...

I am starting to have confidence it'll be back in the fall, though.

Well, technically it wasnt supposed to be. They were only able to film 9 eps. due to the writers strike and for whatever reason Fox decided not to go back and film the remaining four shows.

The Wire

''You start to tell the story, you think you're the hero,'' Det. Jimmy McNulty (Dominic West) said in a recent episode, struggling to explain his squishy moral center. ''And then when you get done talking...'' The scene ended mid-apology, so we'll never know the rest of that sentence. And as perhaps the greatest serial ever to smarten up the idiot box concludes its run tonight, we may never learn the answer to his question: Once you realize you're not even the hero of your own story, where the hell does that leave you? At least The Wire leaves us with five seasons of uncompromising quality, telling stories about terribly compromised people. We'd feel better if exquisite antihero Omar (Michael Kenneth Williams) had lived to shoot another day, and even better if Emmy voters finally (finally) gave the show its due. It is, after all, their last chance — The Wire is done talking."
