Paternal Unit: "What's the big deal about getting him to Yuma alive? Just shoot him."
Paternal units quite often don't enter into the spirit of the thing.
Anyway: very fine movie, beautiful looking--looked it was shot in Alberta. Both Bale and Crowe excellent. Peter Fonda was unrecognizable, but good. Ben Foster was so flaming that he practically set the prairie afire. I did recognize Dallas Roberts as Butterfield; he played Sam Phillips in "Walk the Line."
Actually, the whole thing was shot in New Mexico.

I saw this tonight, and its possibly the 2nd best film of the year (behind Rocky Balboa which is the greatest film of all time) and thats out of the 60 or so films ive seen in the cinema.
This just blew me away. The only Westerns ive ever seen before are Calamity Jane, Dances With Wolves, Shane & Back to the Future 3
In general as a kid they just seemed boring & too confusing for me.
But since I started watching Deadwood, I really fell in love with it & was willing to give more a chance.
And this film was a brilliant start to the genre for me.
I loved the mixture of the great story, the tension, the humour...the acting was great too, its been a while since Crowe came in a good role. Ben Foster has been really good this year in this & Alpha Dog, and seems a very promising actor even if he is creepy looking.
Also LOL the Luke Wilson cameo.

He was one of the guys who caught Crowe near the end at the mountain pass where he was tortured.

Aye, I almost agree with you. He comes in at #2 for me. I've heard about this movie quite a bit recently (in no small part from Reynar ) and I would love to see it.
But I went looking for Australian release dates and I couldn't find any.
They had better release it in the cinema. Do you know anything about it down here, Ender?

Darth_boy...you should try Peckinpah..."Ride the High Country"; "The Deadly Companions" and especially, because this film somewhat resembles it..."The Wild Bunch."

A trailer for "American Gangster" with both Crowe and Washington was shown prior to the film. It looked good.

Ben Foster was awesome in this movie. That's a performance that's guaranteed to get him a lot of attention and a lot of work. I believed every second of it.

Yeah, this was pretty good- and I usually don't like Westerns (it's just a genre, like Mob movies, that really needs to do something special, like The Departed, to get me to enjoy watching it- as opposed to, say, Goodfellas or Godfather where I appreciate them for their quality, but they just never click with me).
All the performances were fantastic, and it generally avoided the tired cliches of the genre (I was dreading a showdown duel would be at the end of the movie which would just ruin it, and was pleasantly surprised that that didn't turn out to be the case).
I think what makes the film work is that the story, for the most part, isn't a Western story- the characters and general premise could be transplanted to a modern timeframe and still work with minimal adjustments, so it's basicly a story that just happens to have a Western setting- which, IMO, is when the genre works best. It's when something tries to be a Western and focuses on that, that it just ends up being uninteresting and silly.

OTOH, I *like* Westerns. Dunno why they haven't been so popular lately. Apparently "Jesse James" is also good.

Saw this today. Good movie. Crowe reminded me again that he's more than just an idiot that can throw a phone. I can't believe how far Ben Foster has come since Get Over It. Great performance from him.
Probably not going to be in my top 5 favourite westerns, but worth watching again, certainly.

I thought it was fantastic, especially the last five minutes or so. I thought the movie got better and better as it was but those last few scenes were just amazing. Crowe really blew me away (along with his posse). Christian Bale and Peter Fonda were fantastic as well, as was the kid, but Crowe stole the show for me, especially at the end. Such intensity.
The only bump in the road for me was Luke Wilson... What the devil was he doing there?
