I didn't even recognize him. But Crowe was indeed good; he seems to like Westerns, as one of my very favorite very bad movies is "The Quick and the Dead."

The poster for this film caught my eye more than once; it's the next movie on my list to see but haven't had the time to do too much movie-watching with all my law and business courses.

Finally caught this one over the weekend. My thoughts:
First of all, Foster looked like a scruffy Justin Timberlake. Which is fine, but I reserve the right to throw in a SexyBack-style "Yeah!" every time he shoots someone (along with the occasional "You ready?" and "Take 'em to the bridge!). The cast was fine, from it's all-star leading men (in what's probably the greatest double performance I've seen in a while - this is even better than DiCaprio/Damon) to the smaller parts (I didn't realize that was Alan Tudyk until hisdeath scene).
Even beyond the acting, the film was top-notch in nearly every aspect, from the directing down to the bloodsmears). The writing/directing were both excellent, but I'm not sure how I feel about the Indian country segment. Otherwise, I've got no complaints - aside from the fact that I haven't been able to Google a copy of the script or just the words from Crowe's monologue toward the end. Eventually.

Yeah, this is easily the best western since atleast 2003's OPEN RANGE, and possibly since 1992's UNFORGIVEN. This is what westerns of the golden era were like and what they SHOULD be. What I found amazing about the film, is that despite the fact that it has a lot of action, the action never seems to get in the way of the story, and the movie doesnt use the action as a crutch. I do think there should be a bit of an asterisk beside this movie since it is a remake, so I assume they were able to borrow some stuff. But then again, remakes are generally horrible, so maybe it should be seen as a major accomplishment that this film is a great remake. The end threw me off a little bit. But other than that, it is a very solid movie.

Christian Bale is really what makes this movie for me. I've grown up around westerns, as my father is a wanna be cowboy from Houston. I've seen Wyatt Earp, Unforgiven, Lonesome Dove, Dances with Wolves, countless John Wayne and Clint Eastwood westerns, and many more that escape my memory. It was well made. But my intrest was held by Bale and how wonderful he looked with that facial hair and toting a gun. OOh. The stuff my dreams are made of.

Is it really a remake though, if it's based on a book? New adaptation would seem more a more appropriate description.

I read a stupid review which said Bale's performance 'sucked all the joy from the room.'

Well what reviewers say had never mattered much to me. They have a habit of panning some of my favorite movies. So I ignore them and like what I like. Bale can give the worse preformance ever and I will still love how hot he looks. That was what I really was commenting on.
