NBC taps Liman for 'Knight Rider'
NBC is bringing back "Knight Rider," tapping Doug Liman to produce a "Transformers"-inspired reworking of the 1980s hit action-drama series about a man and his indestructible supercar.
Peacock is readying a two-hour backdoor pilot for the project, with tentative plans to air it as a telepic later this season. Liman is open to the idea of directing, assuming his feature sked allows. If the telepic clicks, a new-model "Knight Rider" could be on the air as early as next fall.
Dave Andron ("Raines") is writing the pilot script and will serve as supervising producer alongside exec producers Liman and Dave Bartis ("The O.C.," "Heist") for Universal Media Studios and Dutch Oven Prods.
Success of "Transformers" had a role in inspiring NBC Entertainment chief Ben Silverman's decision to revive "Knight." The thinking is that smallscreen f/x have advanced to the point where it'd be feasible to have a weekly series in which cars shift shapes.
It's also likely the new show will explore the idea of "evil" cars to offset the heroic talking K.I.T.T. car of the original skein, which starred David Hasselhoff. That said, skein is expected to essentially remain focused on the story of a single man fighting for justice with the help of his superadvanced car.
There's also huge potential for advertiser integration. General Motors was all over "Transformers," and it's easy to see NBC striking a rich deal with a single automaker to serve as the exclusive auto brand for the new "Knight." It's understood preliminary talks have already begun.
Peacock is also veering from current conventional wisdom by moving forward with a telepic/backdoor pilot for "Knight." Nets rarely produce telepics with an eye on turning them into series anymore, in part because the telepic has essentially disappeared from the broadcast network scene.
But NBC execs no doubt feel "Knight Rider" is enough of a pre-sold brand to lure an audience. What's more, the telepic could serve as a good replacement for repeats come spring, perhaps replacing an encore of "Heroes" or "Bionic Woman."
"Knight" originally aired on NBC from 1982 until 1986, with Hasselhoff playing smooth crimefighter Michael Knight. A spinoff skein, "Team Knight Rider," aired in syndication during the 1997-98 season.
Well, "evil cars" is nothing new to the franchise (KARR most famously, but Goliath, the Juggernaught and the Drones could probably count too) and transforming isn't exactly new either (Super-Pursuit Mode, Convertible, and Knight Rider 2000's amphibious mode) but I wonder how far they're going to push the concept.

AICN Script review-SPOILERS!
Ya know- that actually sounds very good. Sounds like they didn't radically change the core of Knight Rider and it's appeal, and that it's a generally realistic update (versus Knight Rider 2000), with exception to a couple Bond-esque elements (visual cloak, etc).

sounds good, I was hoping the new show would have two cars, like the
Pole Position cartoon, but i guess even two good cars is still too many.
when I'm old and have tons of free time I'm going to build a K.I.T.T. just like

The Hollywood Reporter posted: A familiar road to Knight
Another soap star to topline series
Nov 2, 2007
Meet the new Knight Rider.
"All My Children" hunk Justin Bruening is set as the lead in NBC's two-hour backdoor pilot "Knight Rider," a "Transformers"-inspired sequel to the 1980s series, which is slated to air as a movie later in the season.
Bruening will play the son of Michael Knight, the character played by David Hasselhoff in the original series. And like father, like son, the choice of Bruening closely resembles Hasselhoff's casting a quarter-century ago.
Like Bruening, Hasselhoff was a soap star ("The Young & the Restless") with few other credits when he landed "Knight Rider." He was almost the same age as Bruening, who is 28.
Bruening also follows in the footsteps of fellow "Children" alum Josh Duhamel, who made the transition from soap actor to primetime leading man as the star of NBC's "Las Vegas."
Steve Shill is set to direct and co-exec produce "Rider," which was penned by Dave Andron. Doug Liman and Dave Bartis are executive producing for Universal Media Studios and Dutch Oven Prods. Andron serves as supervising producer.
Bruening plays Jamie Martin on "Children" and also had a role on the ABC soap "One Life to Live."

Ugh...
That's ugly. The high scanner light looks terrible. If it had been in the grille, instead of making a glowing red "nose", it might have been passable, but it's lacking the sports sleekness/sexiness. I'm herebey referring to this vehicle as the "Cylon Sneeze" until further notice.
Also Bruce "Senator Kelly" Davidson has been cast in the telefilm as well.

They have tried many times before to bring Knight Rider back. It may or this time. Heck it won't be as bad as Team Knight Rider.

Even Knight Rider 2000 wasn't that bad- but it was harmed by the unneeded future-setting and making the car red. Things like KIFT and the general criminal investigation/conspiracy worked for the most part, and some scenes had a relaly great stark/florescent lighting look to them that added a level of grit to the feel of the show. But the bad distracted heavily enough from the good to make it a misfire.

we don't know for sure if the new car will even have a scanner.
I get the feeling that they are going for a more normal looking car.
I think that this could be a total crap shoot. I have no idea what to expect.

plus knight Rider 2000 had a James Doohan cameo.
I actually want to see this new Knight Rider, even though William Daniels is not back, they got Will Arnett, who I'll watch in just about anything. And you know what, the main new guy, kinda does look likea young Hoff in some pictures.

This could grow on me, or it could be just as bad as team knight rider, but since I never watch TV anymore, I don't know what to think.

Second Teaser Commercial is out
This new KITT voice kinda sounds like a mix between KITT and the first KARR's voice.

I think it is a well worn conclusion that there is almost no originality left in Hollywood. The best we can hope for is a decent updating of an old idea.
And I don't know why everyone is hating on the new KITT. I love me a Mustang.
