From EW/Hollywood Reporter:
"— Universal Studios snagged Borat star Sasha Baron Cohen's next project, Bruno, for a reported $42.5 million. Another character from Cohen's HBO series Da Ali G Show, Bruno is a gay Austrian who believes he is a fashion maven and ''the voice of Austrian youth TV.'' Jay Roach (director of the Austin Powers and Meet the Parents films) would again produce the movie, which does not yet have a director. (Hollywood Reporter, 10/30)"

Gah, this was upsetting the first time I heard it, and it still is.
Being an avid fan of Da Ali G Show (Cohen is a man of genius, plain and simple), Bruno is easily my least favorite of the three characters. It's not that he's unfunny (some of his stuff is quite hilarious), it's just that Ali G and Borat are so much funnier.
I know Ali G Indahouse is only a few years old, but that was a scripted movie. I'd like to see an unscripted movie centered around him, similar to Borat. It can, and should, be done.

i think the bruno bits make for some of the funniest moments of the show, only because (like some of the borat sketches in the south) they tend to showcase people at their worst. that said, i'm not sure how well that will translate into a 90 minute film.
it doesn't seem like there's been any new news about this movie in almost a year.

From EW:
"Hitman' director still on board
Oct 16, 2007, 03:52 PM | by Nicole Sperling
Categories: Movie Biz
Contrary to the Internet posts that were swirling through the blogosphere last week, Xavier Gens, the French director on Fox's movie adaptation of the video game Hitman, is still topping the project. The rumors suggested that Fox was wary of the film's hard R rating and brought in Live Free or Die Hard editor Nicolas de Toth to tone down the violence in the edit bay. Hollywood Insider talked directly to Gens who confirmed that he's still in the editing room. Gens added, "Nick de Toth is helping us finish the movie because of the tight schedule. I made the movie I want. All what you can read in the press is wrong." Fox confirmed that Gens is still on the project and says it is not shying away from the violence in the film. (Check out the trailer.) The film bows Nov. 21."
Isn't it a bit late to can the director?

Very good to know. At least it'll keep the realism, since it seems it's completely lost its faith to the source material (seriously, 47 does not shave his head!).

From EW: "DiCaprio, Scorsese to reunite on Shutter Island
After mulling several possible projects following their Best Picture triumph earlier this year with The Departed, Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese appear to have settled on an adaptation of Dennis Lehane's 2003 novel Shutter Island. It will be the pair's fourth collaboration. Set in 1954, the film would feature DiCaprio as Teddy Daniels, a U.S. marshal who investigates the disappearance of a woman from a Boston-area hospital for the criminally insane. Other Lehane novels have been adapted into acclaimed movies, including Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone, the film version of which opened to largely positive reviews and decent ticket sales last weekend. DiCaprio and Scorsese's three films together — The Departed, 2002's Gangs of New York, and 2004's The Aviator — have amassed a combined 26 Oscar nominations. Scorsese is known for his ongoing collaborations with certain actors: He has directed Harvey Keitel six times and overseen Robert De Niro on eight films. (Variety)"
I'm not sure I want to see more Lehane...

By this point the Scorsese/DiCaprio collaboration has my approval but I was kind of hoping, now he's finally had a hit and an oscar, Scorsese would take a break from the mainstream and do a more personal film again. I really want to see him do that 'Silence' project with Daniel Day Lewis and Harvey Keitel that seemed to be on the backburner for so long.
Also, I wouldn't put too much stock in this story - Scorsese seems to change his mind on what film he'll do next about twice a week.

Most directors do.

"Favreau, McGraw, Yoakam in 'Christmases'
(FROM HOLLYWOOD REPORTER) – Jon Favreau and country music artists Tim McGraw and Dwight Yoakam have been cast in the romantic comedy Four Christmases, which stars Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn. The story is about a couple (Vaughn and Witherspoon) who struggle to visit all four sets of parents over the holidays. Favreau and McGraw will play Vaughn's bullying siblings, and Yoakim will play a pastor who is married to the mother of Witherspoon's character. Sissy Spacek, Kristin Chenoweth, and Robert Duvall also star. Seth Gordon is directing for New Line Cinema and Spyglass Entertainment. Christmases is set to release during the 2008 holiday season. Favreau and Vaughn both became stars after working together in 1996's Swingers. They also appeared together in Made and The Break-up. McGraw has appeared the movies Friday Night Lights and The Kingdom. Yoakam had supporting roles in Sling Blade, Panic Room, Hollywood Homicide, and Wedding Crashers, which also starred Vaughn. (Hollywood Reporter)"
This sounds promising, but I'm sure "Fred Claus" did, too.

"My Girl" starlet joins political satire
Thursday May 1 4:07 AM ET
"Former child actor Anna Chlumsky, who starred opposite Macaulay Culkin in the 1991 film "My Girl," will join "Sopranos" veteran James Gandolfini in the political satire "In the Loop."
Gandolfini will play a general in this unofficial adaptation of the BBC series "The Thick of It," which parodies the inner workings of U.S. and British government agencies and their international relations. Chlumsky plays a state department assistant and David Rasche ("United 93") is an undersecretary of state.
The BBC Films project gets under way this month in Washington and the U.K.
The film marks a prestigious return for Chlumsky, 27, who unknowingly trained for her government assistant character while studying international relations at the University of Chicago. After teen acting roles dried up, she says she experienced a "pre-life crisis." She moved to Brooklyn in 2002 and took stints fact-checking for the restaurant guide Zagat and editing at HarperCollins sci-fi imprint Eos.
An epiphany soon came at a nail salon, she said. "Roberta Flack was there getting a manicure and recognized me," Chlumsky recalled. "She told me I should stay in the business. So did a psychic I met on the street."
Stints in off-Broadway plays followed, as did a few minor screen roles, including her friends' low-budget horror film "Blood Car."
Chlumsky still lives in Brooklyn with her new husband, who did a tour in Afghanistan. She said she hasn't been in touch with Culkin in two years.
