I'm sure Lucas is particularly excited about using ILM to really showcase the scale of the air war over Europe. I don't know if any film has ever done this adequately.

He's been wanting to do this project for a long time. I'm glad to see it get off of the back burner and finally start moving forward. Red Tails should be an interesting film to see.

I can't tell from that article if Lucas is actually directing or not. Can anyone clarify that point for me?

The IMDB listing for "Red Tails" lists only a writer, no director.
The IMDB listing for Lucas does not show him as having an in production director's credit.
He is listed as the executive producer.
Verdict: He's not decided.

Sometimes a famous person dies and imdb.com doesn't immediately list them as dead. Doesn't mean they came back to life.
From the AP story, it sounds very much like McCallum is producing and Lucas is directing. I can't imagine the story wouldn't have mentioned the name of a director, if it was going to be someone other than Lucas himself. (Not that he couldn't yet change his mind).

Actually, they're pretty fast with the updates, especially when someone has died.
On the other hand: The Movie Insider Lists Lucas as the Director

I kinda hope he does direct, because his non star wars films that he's directed(American Graffiti and THX-1138) are pretty good.

Me too. I think a George Lucas war movie could be interesting.

I think that was assumed.

From RT: "Confirmed completely awesome director Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Blade Runner) is casting his next movie, a revisionist take on the legend of Robin Hood called Nottingham, and so, several names emerged this week. We already knew that Russell Crowe was going to star as the Sheriff of Nottingham (who in this version is basically a good guy, dealing with the crappy system of lord-over-serf politics that a medieval cop would have to work under). Confirmed to be co-starring is Sienna Miller as Maid Marion, who will be the feminine side of a romantic triangle between the Sheriff and Robin Hood. Where the casting as it now stands ventures slightly more into the "rumor" casting are the names that come to us from the U.K., bastion of (not that) reliable movie news coverage. According to The Daily Mail, Christian Bale is in talks to star as Robin Hood, and Vanessa Redgrave and William Hurt are also in talks for other roles. A reunion of the stars of the 3:10 to Yuma remake, especially in these iconic roles, sounds perfect... almost too good to be true. Here's hoping it is. A portrayal of Robin Hood as more of an actual "Robbing Hoodlum" would also be an interesting way to follow up Bale's first two Batman movies.?

I hope this one doesn't get preachy and modern on us. Scott's Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven were both excellent when they weren't expressing modern views of freedom where they didn't belong. If it avoids that I will definitely catch it in theaters. Definitely will be nice for someone to point that Robin Hood and the real men he probably based on based off of were criminals and mostly immoral men.
I'm really just waiting for any movie to catch up with HBO's Rome on it's portrayal of ancient people. If they are worried about not having a likable protagonist they should note that most everyone loves Pullo despite everything he does in Rome.
