Join me as I take you through the top 50 tv icons of all time according to TV Land.
50. LARRY HAGMAN
His star rose prudishly enough as Major Nelson on I Dream of Jeannie. But as sinister oil tycoon J.R. Ewing on Dallas, Hagman not only pushed the love-to-hate-him envelope, he deposited it. Dallas lasted 14 seasons and made him one of the highest-paid actors of the '80s all justified on Nov. 21, 1980, when 41 million households tuned in to find out ''Who Shot J.R.'' J.R. liked broads, bourbon, and business. And we loved every minute.
Major Nelson and J.R. doesnt get more classic TV than this!

Clive James once commented upon his 'hatband made of crushed budgeriars" which still makes me laugh.

49. CALISTA FLOCKHART
Any character accused of killing feminism deserves a boxed set for her trouble, no? We loved Ally McBeal for the same reasons she landed on Time magazine: She was neurotic but lovable, silly but smart, desperate for a baby one minute but secure in her independence the next. She was every woman by being a meticulously specific one. Nobody could've inhabited her better than the mousy-but-sexy Flockhart. (She now plays a very Ally-like Republican on Brothers & Sisters.) Ms. McBeal's legacy lives on, as Meredith Grey and others follow in her complicated footsteps.
We're Dyin' For... Ally McBeal on DVD
If Ally McBeal comes out on DVD, Im the first in line.

Tonight:
"8-10PM TV Land, TV-PG "The 50 Greatest TV Icons"
"How hard can it be to rank television's 50 most defining individuals? Not that we're complaining, but there were more than 60 years of TV history to be sorted through as we assembled this EW/TV Land collaboration. And while everyone knows the obvious folks who paved the way — Uncle Miltie, Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, Andy Griffith — you might be surprised by the range of more recent TV personalities who fill out the rest of the list, like a certain vampire slayer, a pig-loving amphibian, and two individuals with era-defining hairdos. And no, we're not talking about Wayland Flowers and Madame. —Abby West"

Rather sad good ol' JR is no. 50. He needs to be higher up the list.
I don't think Ally will stand the test of time.

48. JIMMY SMITS
For four seasons on NYPD Blue, L.A. Law alum Smits proved just how complex a good guy can be. Tough but sensitive, Smits' Det. Bobby Simone was the perfect foil for his prickly partner Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz). On the streets or at the station, Bobby was grace personified. And as those censor-taunting season 3 sex scenes with Kim Delaney made clear, he was also the 15th Precinct's Sexiest Man Alive. Bobby's death in season 6 broke our hearts — but thankfully Smits brought us another righteous man in 2004: The West Wing's president-to-be Santos.
Get This! NYPD Blue, season
NYPD Blue, now that was a show to see...

Very good actor in numerous good shows (he's had good luck & taste), but icon? I don't think so.

Hagman should b in the Top 10, easily. JR is maybe the most identifiable TV icon worldwide, period. And certainly above that stick-figure Flockhart.
Smits was great both on LA Law and NYPD Blue. His death on the latter was probably the most emotional TV episode I've ever watched.

Thats funny. I actually caught this on TV yesterday and only saw the party about Flockheart and Smits (before changing the channel.)
Like they said Jimmy Smits was on three of the great shows.
Though I found his West Wing character to be a bit annoying/contrived. He was no Jed Bartlet. I prefered Alan Alda (found him more compelling despite my liberal bias.)

47. SIMON COWELL
''I don't mean to be rude, but...'' American Idol judge Simon Cowell has made a fortune off those seven words, the usual preface to a harsh assessment of a contestant's vocal skills, style, or attitude. (To season 1's Jim Verraros: ''If you win this competition, we will have failed.'') Millions of faithful viewers tune in weekly to see the acerbic Brit — and while every competition-based reality show since has added a ''mean'' judge of its own, none can deliver bad news in such an entertainingly brutal way.
Im not sure how I feel about him being in the top 50. Top 100 definitely, but the top 50 Im not so sure. Maybe in a few years or so.

There is something seriously wrong with our country when a man who makes fun of the mentally unstable is given this sort of honor. We are just proving high school never ends with this crap. As funny as it is to see the cool kids pick on the tards, we need to grow up.

I love Simon Cowell, his honesty and blunt openness. Sure, he's often harsh on the contestants, and sometimes even unfairly so. But most of the time he's also right in his judgment. I think a lot of people (and mostly the contestants) hate him simply because they can't deal with open criticism.

46. LASSIE
A tribute by Triumph the Insult Comic Dog: ''I suppose you think I'm going to poop on Lassie, but come on. Making fun of Lassie would be like making fun of my mother. And from what I hear, Lassie might be my mother. I keed. I worshipped Lassie as a kid. All the puppies in my kennel would dress as Lassie for Halloween, but I couldn't afford the costume. So every year I'd have to put on a mustache and go as Edward James Olmos. You have to give the old bitch credit: She knows just where to lick, bite, and scratch. When I found out that she was really a guy, I only respected her more.''
Our first animal on the list. I much rather see Lassie than Simon Cowell on the list...
