I actually did manage to drag my girlfriend to it yesterday.

She hated it but I loved it. The movie is perfect for what it was trying to be. The acting, dialouge, plot, and visuals all meshed together.

If I was 6 years old this would be my new favorite movie.

Well, I have no interest in seeing Speed Racer, especially now that it could be the biggest dissapointment in film history.

It cost them $120 million to make that movie and it could only bring just over $20 million? I think it's safe to say no sequel unless they do it direct to DVD and with such a big financial loss on this movie, I doubt even that is going to happy. At this rate, this movie can single handedly label this summer movie season as a major bust for Hollywood. Way to go Wachowski Brothers!

The only hope now is that Prince Caspian comes close to $100 million next weekend, Indiana Jones does better than expected, and the Dark Knight breaks all opening weekend record set by Spider-man and Pirates of the Carabean. One can only hope.

You can check the detailed breakdown in the Box Office thread, but the really bad news is that it may do poorly abroad as well.

Many of the critics that do like the movie are saying it's too much, too fast, too over-powering, and leaves you exhausted. Despite all that, I'm actually looking forward to seeing it, and I'm sorry that it's not a hit film.

I went and saw it Friday, and thoroughly enjoyed it. So did the kids in the audience.

It finished second in weekend box office receipts with about 20 million. A little disappointing, but not "the bomb of the year" like some people have saying.

My friend and I are Speed Racer fans (casually).

He thinks the movie is an abomination and will never watch it.

I think it looks fun.

And isn't that what it's all about?

Considering the price of the film, and the amount of money they spent on promotion, it's well on it's way to being the "bomb of the year" if it isn't already.

Well, at #2 in its debut weekend, it isn't out of the running by a long shot. It may still find its footing as the summer progresses. There's also DVD sales to consider, which are now comprise a large portion of a movie's total receipts, as well as the overseas box office -- which, though not stellar, will still contribute to its total intake. I think people are far too quick to dismiss it as a viable piece of entertainment, when it's been out exactly three days.

I think SPEED RACER will be HUGE in Japan and make a LOT of money there. It's seems very oriented toward the Japanese market, just from what I've seen of the endless trailers and commercials. I was immediately struck by the Japanese feel of it.

Weird things can happen with films overseas. One of the best examples I'm aware of is Kubrick's BARRY LYNDON. It cost a lot of money and did not make very much money at all in the United States. It's leisurely pace, the style of the film, everything worked against it. It's simply not a mass audience type of film, it's an arty film for cinephiles.

But here's the rub: BARRY LYNDON did fairly well in Europe, and it was through the roof in Germany. Germany! Don't know why but the film caught fire in Germany and was a big hit there and pushed the film into the profit margin. So who knows? Anything can happen.

THE GOLDEN COMPASS did much, much less box office in the U.S. than expected. But overseas?
Gangbusters! Again, anything can happen.

We've only had the first lap for SPEED RACER. Time will tell.

There's something ever filmmaker needs to know: inducing sensory overload is not a virtue when it comes to special effects.

Well, it IS based on the first successful anime series, but yeah I agree. This movie will probably be gigantic in Japan.

Saw it last night and, visually, it is absolutely spectacular, with cars spinning, sliding, flipping and bumping like some well choreographed dance, all set amongst an amazingly colorful environment. What the Matrix was to comic books and anime visuals, Speed Racer is to those of cartoons and video games.

The plot is basically a cartoon plot- it's pretty easy to anticipate most of what will happen, and it's obviously aimed at kids and families. That said, certain things, like the kid and the monkey, which I thought I was going to loathe, actually managed to be funny at times (how can you NOT love their sugar-coma-induced driving frenzy as they plow down dozens of engineers on segways? laugh ) and the two main fight sequences are really enjoyable ("Was that a ninja?!") and the racing sequences, again, are just gorgeous art in motion, with tracks and racing actions that I would have thought we'd only get to see in an F-Zero movie one day (hopefully this film's performance won't hinder the possibility of getting an actual F-Zero movie made one day, as F-Zero could take a serious, more realistic approach to the concept, instead of the technicolor cartoon camp).

It's not a movie for everybody- agian, it's definitely skewed younger, but compared to the majority of true outright crap that's passed off for kid and family-friendly entertainment over the past decade-plus, Speed Racer is by far one of the best, most enjoyable entries available for material aimed at that demographic, and if you turn off your brain tpwards the plot, even older audiences can enjoy the visual feast.

Speed Racer + IMAX == hot sex.

Also, much like I found it amusing that South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut was the best movie on parental responsibility in a media culture the year it came out, I find it amusing that Speed Racer may be the best movie about family that comes out this year.

I would also like to have copious amounts of sex with Trixie.

And John Goodman is a bad-ass; no one should forget this!

I'm glad to hear that people are enjoying the movie for what it is: a fun, kid-oriented popcorn flick. Maybe now that word-of-mouth is getting around, it will find its legs and continue to make money through the summer season.
