I noticed in the index that we have a lot of specialty music threads here, but we really don't have one all-inclusive thread for people to come in and share their thoughts on whatever music they feel like talking about. That would be this thread, whether it be an artist, an album, an EP, a single, a video, whatever it may be, come in and talk about it. Debate, argue, whatever, because it's music, and it's all good.

Some stuff I've been listening to lately,

Aesop Rock - None Shall Pass

--I passed on listening to any Aesop for a very long time, he was hyped far too much by the nerdy white contingent of online rap fans, and without hearing him he didn't seem like he would appeal all that much to me. But like usual, I was wrong, and I should have tried him out earlier. He flows really well, the beats are very good as well, and he manages to get deep with his prose in most of the songs. Now, don't get me wrong, for as good as this is Aesop is still an acquired taste, sometimes his deep and introspective flow is welcome but other times it seems a bit burdensome and too far reaching. So all in a very good album, but one that kind of depends on what you feel like at the moment.

John Hiatt & North Mississippi AllStars - Master Of Disaster

--Hiatt is in the vein of Dylan, Young & Kristofferson, but he also has a bit of Cash and Diamond in him. It's not that he's country or cheesy, but it's that while he has a message to get across and he is clearly a great songwriter he also likes to have fun with his music and shows that in the light hearted nature of his lyrics and the tempo provided by the band. Really good album, and I'd suggest anyone that is into singer/songwriter types in any way check it out.

Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill

--Ya know, it's a shame that Hill went literally bat**** insane, because she was one hell of a talented musician. She manages to touch on important and meaningful issues but she never seems forced while doing so, it all flows so naturally for her. She is really good at implementing catchy and engaging hooks, and she uses a nice spectrum of beats, everything from the 50's to modern day. So get this album if you want to hear a female MC, or R&B artist depending on how you look at it, at the top of her game before she lost it all and went crazy.

PJ Harvey - White Chalk

--A little less rockish than the PJ that I'm used to. She's still brooding and melodic, but gone is a lot of the venom and sheer "I am ******* pissed and the only way to cure that is to rock out" that she exuded that I loved so much. In it's place is a more somber and reflective style, and while still quite good it leaves a little wanting. A good album, although not a great one.

Jedi Mind Tricks - Visions Of Gandhi

--Lost amid rampant homophobia there is quite a bit of nice flow to be found here, as well as some good beats. However that flow and those beats aren't sustained, one song kills while the next one makes you want to kill the MC. I think this is as big of a case as you will ever find of a group falling in love with their gimmick too much, to the point where I don't think JMT can flow when they aren't rapping about killing gay people or beating up some **** and that's quite sad because there is obvious talent contained within, but there message completely overrides that talent and makes them a one trick pony.

Pixies - Surfer Rosa

--The Pixies are often labeled as Nirvana before Nirvana was Nirvana, and to be honest I don't quite get that. Yes, some of the grungy sound is there, but where Nirvana was morose and full of dread and made sure you knew as such in their melodic tones, the Pixies are morose and full of dread but they show this to you through flowery lyrics and uptempo beats. This entire album is lyrically superb, and as already mentioned made entirely deep by the way they try and hide their true intentions through some excellent guitar and drum work. A great album that everyone should get.

That's it for now, but I shall return with more later.

I've really been listening to "Tegan and Sara" a lot recently. A couple months ago I couldn't stand them, but I've grown to really LOVE their latest album "The Con."
It is actually a really solid pop album. There are some duds, and combing through their discography there are some songs that I really just hate. But, the good ones are really good and catchy.

Some of my older favorites:
Walking with a Ghost
My Number
Living Room
Monday Monday Monday
Divided
Speak Slow
Where Does the Good Go

Best from "The Con"
The Con
Back in your Head (It grew on me...)
Hop a Plane
Like O, Like H
Are You Ten Years Ago
Nineteen
Call it Off

And of course, I'm still listening to Brandi Carlile. Hardly a day has gone by in the past 8-9 months that I haven't listened to a Brandi Carlile song. I highly recommend people to check out her stuff. It's more folk-rock than anything, but she's got a hell of a voice.

I've also been listening to these cds from 2007:
Missy Higgins: On A Clear Night
The White Stripes: Icky Thump
Patrick Park: Everyone's in Everyone
Josh Rouse - Country Mouse City House
A Fine Frenzy: One Cell in the Sea
Wilco: Sky Blue Sky
Iron & Wine: The Shepard's Dog
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
KT Tunstall: Drastic Fantastic
Smashing Pumpkins: Zeitgeist
Band of Horses: Cease to Begin
Cary Brothers: Who You Are
Okkervil River: The Stage Names
Eskimo Joe: Black Fingernails, Red Wine
Coconut Records: Nighttiming
Once Soundtrack

I've also been listening to the Lady in the Water soundtrack quite a bit. It has some rather haunting musical pieces on there.

New Smashing Pumpkins acoustic EP, American Gothic. I was expecting something sparse and folky in light of the new acoustic tunes they'd done on tour, but this is more elaborate and rocky. I like the method of this release -less than a month from recording to distribution online- and hope they do more like that. It works well with the EP format, which I've always liked going back to the second CD I ever purchased: Digital Underground - This Is An EP Release.

Much too much Japanese pop and rock. It all just reminds me of the best music from the 80s and 90s.

Artist/CD I've been listing to alot recently:

Blake Lewis - Audio Day Dream

I really love some of the stuff this guy has done. It feels fresh, but a good mix of old/new at the same time. Awesome stuff.

i think it's a little unfair to compare this one with the rock of old. clearly she felt that she no longer made art to reflect herself. i find the album a dark and beautiful meditation, it's broken and fragile, a lot like the white chalk she named it after.

i was very happy that amongst all the happy noises out there, she managed to produce something that is almost alien to today's radio landscapes.

the other thing i listen to a lot is bat for lashes - fur and gold, mystical and playful music, a bit funfair and a lot of darkness. i like.

There may have been one, but to be honest all "What's on your iPod" topics turn into listmania, and this is not what this topic is meant to be.

Bloc Party's Silent Alarm[i] and [i]Weekend in the City have been pretty much the only thing I've been listening to for the past week. Before that, it was Jimmy Eat Worlds Static Prevails

A few new albums I've been spinning,

(Based on a very helpful suggestion, from now on I will be providing links to the album page at AllMusic that features 30-45 second samples of most of the songs off the albums so that everyone can get a feel for the albums. If that doesn't do it for you then you should also check out their MySpace pages, if they have one, YouTube, or just google them and see what pops up.)

(The) Melvins - (A) Senile Animal

--The Melvins are heavy without being too heavy, and I like that about them. They know exactly where to hit to be heavy and almost sludge like, but they don't cross that line into the next level of heavyness. The songs can get a bit repetitive, but that didn't bother me all that much because all of the songs were good and even if they were a bit similar they all brought little things to the table in their own rights. A Vast Filthy Prison just can't be any better than it is, it really can't, a great song to end a great album, definitely check this out.

(A) Senile Animal

Buddy Guy & Junior Wells - Alone & Acoustic

--Two friends sitting side by side and jamming away, and making great music while doing so, that is what this album is all about. You have two giants of the blues sitting side by side and just doing their own thing, it's really hard to put into words what this album does for me, but it's like being there with both of them and just watching, and listening, in awe as these two giants bring me into their world with their music that sounds like it was crafted just for me. Definitely a must listen for anyone into more bluesy material.

Alone & Acoustic

Regina Spektor - Begin To Hope

--I hate, hate, hate Guns 'N' Roses, but anyone that can craft a song with a chorus that deals with November Rain and how good of a song it is or how it's refrain was great has my neverending love. Spektor is quirky, soft, loud, out there, mellow, introspective, and a wee bit crazy, but it all works for her. Each song is crafted beautifully, her voice carries the weight of each song perfectly, and her musicianship is really enthralling. 20 Years Of Snow, On The Radio, and Summer In The City are the tracks I would most recommend, but in general I would recommend this to anyone that is into the singer/songwriter genre, but is looking for something a little different with a little bit of everything infused into the material.

Begin To Hope

Neurosis - Given To The Rising

Neurosis is a band that has always been recommended to me with the caveat that, "If you like Tool then you will love this band." It took me awhile but, man were those people right. I really do like Tool, but what has always bugged me about them is that on every album that have at least two songs, sometimes more, that are completely unnecessary/bad/can be done away with/just don't belong. Neurosis showed me a world where you can be a little out there, be heavy, be progressive, have incredibly deep material, great writing, great musicianship, just great all around everything and not feel the need to screw up the album with filler. Hidden Faces, Water Is Not Enough, and Origin are world changing in their levels of awesomeness. Regardless of what music you like everyone needs to check this album and this band out.

Given To The Rising
