If you want character development then "Aliens" delivers in spades. Ripley becomes a mother, she gets over her hatred for androids & she is able to face her greatest fear and conquer it. Cameron took what made the original film work & added fresh ideas to make a superior sequel. This film is a terrific sci-fi movie that covers its bases on acting, story, social commentary and a strong female lead. This is the peak of the franchise & a highpoint in sci-fi.

I agree there was oppurtunity for incredible character development and as I have said the latter third of the film where Ripley conquers her fear of the Aliens to not only march into the lion's den but to go so far as battle the queen one on one was terrific and riveting. But up to that point I rarely felt engaged or even interested. Indeed the only character that I have any interest in is Ripley (with Bishop and Newt coming up closely behind), but most of the time I simply felt apathetic.

Again to each their own and I am not suggesting its a bad movie, I am simply stating that I didn't find it to be nearly as good as some people make it out to be. But thats just me.

I have that same problem with several movies that many on these boards praise highly: the aforementioned Superman Returns, the legendary Chinatown, and The Matrix Reloaded, which is highly regarded by several inteligent posters on the internet.

All these films are in genres I like, all of them have decent to great acting, all look good on the screen. Yet I find it difficult to be interested in the characters or invested in the action.

I guess it really is just down to pesonal taste.

8. STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION (1987-1994)
Created by Gene Roddenberry and Rick Berman

It probably shouldn't have worked, resurrecting Star Trekas a TV series. Lightning is hard enough to bottle once, but twice? Just the same, Trek godfather Gene Roddenberry gave it a go, and in doing so allowed us to take TV sci-fi seriously again. And the masterstroke was casting Patrick Stewart. By signing on as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard, the Royal Shakespeare Company veteran gave The Next Generation a gravitas-laden foundation to build on. (Having Brent Spiner as Data and Jonathan Frakes as Commander Riker definitely helped.) As time went on, the writers and producers erected a sci-fi gold standard, tackling subjects as varied as homosexuality, euthanasia, and slavery — all while flitting around the cosmos doing battle with Romulans, Klingons, and the Borg.

POP CULTURE LEGACY The Next Generation resuscitated the dormant Star Trek television franchise, spawning Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise.

THE BEST BIT Season 3 brought landmark episodes like the time-travel gem ''Yesterday's Enterprise,'' the classic Trek touchstone ''Sarek,'' and one of the best season-ending cliff-hangers in TV history: the Borg-centric ''The Best of Both Worlds, Part I.'' —Marc Bernardin

I've never seen it all, but some of the episodes I've seen have been very good--the empath bride was a good one, and the dying planet. Have not, however, seen the three episodes they mention.

TNG was good, but for me it never could measure up to the original series. The characters were just not as interesting. Data is a lesser-facsimile of Spock.. Too many characters that just are dull or uninteresting (Troy, Dr. Crusher, Dr. Pulaski, Geordi (as much as i love Levar Burton!))

The show did benefit when they stopped trying to focus on the wooden-Riker and realized what a dynamic pressence they had in Patrick Stewart, and the Borg were initially a terrifying adversary (too bad they reduced them to the level of pathetic in latter iterations of Trek).

But the entire thing just felt slightly flat, and the actors just did not have the chemistry to make the witty repartie REALLY work for me...

Again, it was good, and probably the best thing Trek has put out in SOME time, but......the original was far superior.

7. E.T. (1982)
Directed by Steven Spielberg

"Twenty-five years ago, E.T. invented the sci-fi weepie. And consider this: Have we seen another one since? Until Star Wars was rereleased in 1997, E.T. was the highest-grossing film of all time, and it's easy to see why. The movie is basically A New Hope crossed with Casablanca, a mixture as perfect as the chocolate and peanut butter in Reese's Pieces. The bond between Elliott and E.T., one of the most touching film friendships ever, showed that sci-fi was capable of real, glowing heart underneath its fantastical, otherworldly trappings.

POP CULTURE LEGACY The movie's other major accomplishment? Revealing Steven Spielberg as an auteur who was capable of much more than whiz-bang thrills. If not for E.T., there would likely be no Saving Private Ryan or Schindler's List.

THE BEST BIT A boy, a bicycle, an alien, a full moon, and John Williams' swelling score: Elliott's bike ride through the night sky, with E.T. stuffed in the front basket, will keep giving audiences goose bumps until much nastier extraterrestrials come along and destroy the earth. —Gregory Kirschling"

E.T is definitely a inspirational movie and one of my favorite movies by far. The ending is great.

This movie hasn't aged as well as Star Wars (A New Hope). It's still entertaining, of course.

I've always found E.T. to be highly overrated. I never liked it as a kid and I don't really find it that interesting or inspiring as an adult.

The issue is that Spielberg closed out the "sci/fi fantasy set in a suburban landsacpe" genre, and now it seems old. You have Close Encounters, E.T., the Spielberg-produced Poltergeist and a section of War of the Worlds that taken as a body of work pretty much say all that will ever need to be said about suburban angst pitted against the supernatural.

I find myself still enjoying E.T to this day grin Needless to say, for me the Williams score brings this movie up considerably.

I loved E.T, i found him adorable, and i think the kids' performance was great. You could believe that a boy and an alien became best friends. The ending is so sad, i remember i used to always cry cause i didnt want him to leave blush laugh

I never liked the movie as a kid, but I finally saw it during the 20th anniversary rerelease in theaters...and I was blown away. What an amazing film. Everything- the tone, the acting, the moments, the magic, the music- brilliant. The last 15 minutes or so is a Williams/Spielberg tour-de-force that builds to an incredibly emotional moment- if you don't have tears in your eyes at the end of this, you either have no soul or are Soontir-Fel (granted, it's a subtle distinction... wink ).

I enjoyed it even as a kid, and have come to appreciate it even more now. It bothers me when people say it's 'overrated'. Sci-Fi is more than just explosions and cool special effects. happy
