Not sure if this is the right forum for this, or if anyone has started a discussion about this, but regardless of my previous delusions, it looks like Sony, after decades of trying, may have actually won the monopoly on an entertainment format.

WB and New Line Cinema have both decided to go exclusively Blu-ray.

Even a major news article stated pretty boldly that this will probably kill HD-DVD. There are no more companies supporting both formats now. All are exclusive to one format or the other. Only two are left with HD-DVD -- Paramount (which includes Dreamworks) and Universal.

My guess is that WB compared the last months sales figures for the Harry Potter movies and found that Blu-ray copies significantly dominated HD-DVD. I found it interesting that they balked on releasing The Matrix Trilogy in both formats earlier last year, but that they appeared to make a very calculated effort to release all five of the HP movies in both formats (including sets) on the same day.

Also, anybody that I know via church, work, etc who bought some type of high def player over the holiday all bought blu-ray players. Nobody that I know bought an HD-DVD player or attachment for their 360. Shockingly, these, what I call, less informed general public types knew what Blu-ray was, but did not really know about HD-DVD. When I made the comment during a conversation that HD-DVD and Blu-ray don't really have a different picture, this one lady I know said that's not true because she was getting DVD and HD-DVD mixed up. So, the whole familiar terminology theory may be actually backfiring because it appears to cause confusion amongst the general public; whereas, Blu-ray stands out in the general public's mind as something definitely different from regular DVD.

Wal-Mart tried to help the situation with their HD-DVD advertisements in an effort to prevent Sony, the imperialists that they are, from finally winning a formay war. However, it does not appear to have made the impact they sought.

In actuality, Blu-ray is probably better; if only for the storage capacity factor, but I just don't like the idea of Sony having the monopoly on a format.

It happens, though. One was going to win, because both can't.

See this. . .

I'm quite sure this made WB's decision for them since they just made their decision on 1/04/08.

I guess this means no Lord of the Rings on HD-DVD now.

How would Sony have a monopoly on it? Lots of other companies make Blu-ray players— some even make combination Blu-ray/HD DVD players.

Blu-ray is a better format. Be glad it won.

Other companies will have to make Blu-ray players because Sony has a monopoly on the format.

Haven't you ever notice that Phillips/Maganavox doesn't make nearly as many electronics as they used to make since around the late 80's / early 90's? The reason why you can go into a Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Circuit City, etc and find a few Phillips/Magnavox TV's, but other companies releasing multiple styles of TV's in the same size is because Phillips developed the CD technology which revolutionized the music industry. Every time a CD (blank or not) is manufactured, they get a few cents for each one which means that they, for quite a while at least, have been able to nearly retire from making other products. The CD business alone provides them with a cashflow that companies like Sony only dream of.

It's not that I mind another company controlling the format, but I just did not want Sony win. I wish another company had developed Blu-ray.

Excuse me, I should have indicated that Phillips receives royalties on every DVD made. I was thinking it was the CD, but I have read up on this and misunderstood some information, but my frustration is still the same. I just did not want Sony to make anymore money than they already do.

Well, first of all, how is your life changed by whether or not a multinational makes a little more money or not? Does your life really change in a significant way?

Secondly, if you really think they're going to be doing all that great, you should look into buying some Sony stock, then you'll benefit as well! wink

I am not the biggest fan of Sony in general, but I really just want one standard HD format. I am glad it's pretty much over, especially if Paramount bails on the deal they struck a few months back.

Thanks for the additional update. Interesting article. I guess, by my birthday in April, I should know whether or not I want to or should get a Blu-ray player or not.

Neither will win as neither are really the future successor of the DVD and with HDMI 1080p upscaling a very affordable thing to do, I think DVD will reign supreme for a while yet.

How is BluRay not the successor of DVD? And there is a noticable difference between upscaling 480p DVDs and a DVD in 1080p. Not to mention many BluRays have uncompressed 5.1 or 6.1 sound, unlike DVD which is always compressed.

The difference is negligable if you don't have an HDTV. And HDTVs are not the norm in most households, although they are on the way. Until that happens many people won't bother with BluRay.

Well yeah Captain Obvious, there is no point to BluRay without an HDTV. And more and more people have HDTVs now. And a ton more will go ahead and get one when regular television (NTSC) is taken off the air.
