Yeah, February 2009 will be the end of analog television broadcasts.

Yes but how many people do you know with antennas? Everyone I know has either cable or satellite. Those people will only have to do something if they have cable without a box (aka analog cable). They'll have to get a box from their cable company and they'll be fine.

Lord-Tice posted: Neither will win as neither are really the future successor of the DVD and with HDMI 1080p upscaling a very affordable thing to do, I think DVD will reign supreme for a while yet.
I think the latest estimates indicate Blu-Ray penetration in the American marketplace could reach roughly 25% towards the end of 2008, which is considered the "tipping point" in consumer acceptance. Or some such thing.
Right now unless you watch mostly new releases and the most popular titles, there's very little advantage to having a Blu-Ray player over a good upscaling DVD player, especially with so many famous movie series not yet out on BR: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, LOTR, Star Trek, etc. Or even many great classic films that really need every bit of detail, like Lawrence of Arabia.
Once that more of the all-time greats make their way to Blu-Ray, it might just be a whole different story. But for the time being, I guess upscaling isn't a bad way to go (unless you have money to burn).

They HAVE to get the costs down. I checked a week ago and Best Buy still is pretty much right around $400 for a new player. Most discs are $25-35 and that ain't gonna happen either. Prices need to drop more for this to really take off.

Dvds and dvd players were pretty expensive when they first came out, and now that Blu-ray won teh format war, the price should be dropping sooner or later.

It'd betted. I'm ready to get my HDTV, but one of my motivations is Blu-Ray.

DVD players started (low end) at $250. Discs within two months of launch were as low as $18.99. So no. This is far more expensive.

Doesn't sound like you're talking inflation into account.

Har har. That's not a factor when DVD players are 50 bucks and DVD discs are as low as $7.

But the actual comparison would have to be the prices of DVD players and DVDs when the format was relatively new, in the late 90's, with Blu-Ray players and BR discs right now, when the format is fairly new still.
I remember our first DVD player was about $500, not sure what year it was.

I bought an high quality dvd player when they first came out. I got it for a good price though from a "friend"
Anyways when I bought my PS3(the 400 version with the 40 gig Hard drive) I killed two birds with one stone, so I didn't care too much about the price. I haven't bought too many blu ray movies yet, but I tend to only buy movies i'll watch a lot, so whenever I do buy a blu ray film, it's a good investment.

Even with inflation, Blu Ray was no where near those prices at launch and still isn't close.
