Sorry, but I disagree. I could get a PS3 for $350 right now and have both a gaming console and a Blu-Ray player, which is a heck of a better deal, imho, than a low-end DVD player would have been in the late 90's or early 00's.

So as I was saying, they HAVE to get the costs down soon, if they want the public to embrace this format. Standalone players for $400 and discs from $25 to $35 are not going to entice the masses into buying this stuff. Prices need to drop more for this to really take off.

I don't think there's any doubt that prices will drop, as time goes on. That's why this coming holiday season will be crucial if Blu-Ray is going to become more than just a small niche item. Right at this moment, the situation of the U.S. economy might be an ever bigger stumbling block than the actual prices; many people are cutting down on a lot of costs because of the high price of gas and the sluggish economy.

If not this holiday, maybe the next?
The real question is how long before online downloads become dominant. Blu-ray is just an extension of the DVD era; how long this extension will last is questionable. It's already quick and easy to download films - the only thing lacking is the capability to do so legally. Which I imagine we'll be seeing in the near future, just as iTunes followed Napster.

It's quick and easy to download films from Apple.

The prices of stuff of this nature will always drop after a while. I think that most people are patient enough to wait for that to happen. Most people are more concerned with more important things like gas and food prices right now than they are with Blu-ray.

I absolutely agree with that, it's a sluggish time for the economy in America and many parts of the world.
Having said that, just to play devil's advocate, if you already have an HDTV and you're already renting movies from Netflix, you could start enjoying movies in Blu-Ray with just a one-time expense, which could come in the form of a PS3.
For me, personally, until more of the all-time great movies become available, BR isn't going to be worth it at any price.

Yes, but Apple's policies are a *****. I like to stay away from iTunes.
I should add another requirement: as soon as it's quick and easy to download films legally and play them on a television set. With HDMI, it's that much easier to hook up a computer to a TV, so I'd say we're making progress.
