Having said that, just to play devil's advocate, if you already have an HDTV and you're already renting movies from Netflix, you could start enjoying movies in Blu-Ray with just a one-time expense, which could come in the form of a PS3.
I have an HDTV and a PS3, so i've got it made.

I think Lord-Tice was referring to DVDs with upscaling feature, which is probably the next best thing to having a Blu-Ray player (at least in part because so many popular movies have not yet been released on BR).
At least to me, getting the DVD player w/upscaling is the better deal right now.

Blu-Ray discs are real 1080p. Upscaling is taking the resolution of normal DVD and "upconverting" it to improve the picture. This works to an extent but you cannot make something out of nothing, so it's not nearly as nice looking as true 1080p, which Blu Ray is. As for HDMI, that refers to the cable used to connect a good upscaling DVD player or a Blu Ray player to a TV or receiver with HDMI capability.

Still, upscaling is the next best thing for those who don't want to get a BR now. And it's probably what most people would want to get if they have an HDTV with a screen larger than about 40".

I'm not debating that. Actually I am not debating anything with you at all. I was answering DarthArsenal6's actual question.

Upscaling interests me; I'm not sure I want to spend the money right now.

Save your money and buy Blu Ray when it comes down in price enough.

Thanks for the info on HDMI and 1080p, Princess_Tina and Strilo
Strilo is right, I think its better to save money on Blu-ray instead of HD or 1080p. Also as Strilo stated that blue-ray players and recorders, will go down in prices in the near future.
This has happen before with VHS, Cassttes,DVDs and CDs, Blu-ray is no different.
Possibly in the future, their could be further improvements on Blue-ray such as storing 100GB or storing 12h on SP with great quality of picture and sound. Or even storing 3D videos for 3D TV if it ever comes.
But heres a thought:
Think of the electromagnetic spectrum
When Red Diode was created it gave us Red Laser (laser diodes emitting red) which in turn gave us the ability to store info on CD then to DVD and now HD-DVD
Blue Diode was created only 7 years ago which gave us Blu-ray
Again Blue diode -> Blue Laser -> Blu-ray
Obviously a relativily a new technology, in a matter of time we might see the likes of HD-Blu ray or something more dramatic like we saw the change from CD to DVDs.
What about Voilet Diode. This has not been invented yet, but lets say it has.
Yes we'll covert all our Blu-ray disc to Violet ones and throw out our Blu-ray record/players
and electronic goods company will have another field day with money.
Imagine the Storage capicity 100TB (Terrobytes)on one disc and the quality, also red laser are used to create microchips and proceesor chips, blue laser may create super chips and voilet laser - nano technology ? but thats another story.
However at the end of it all alot of energy is needed to create light emitting from a diode when you go down from RED to VOILET in the elctromagnetic spectrum. Plus technology will always bring out new and better equipment.
Also I'm not a beliver of one waiting for the ultimate technology in other words I'm not going sit around waiting for Voilet ray Players/recorders. You have to live at one point and enjoy life.
PS Gamma emitting diodes anyone ? LOL Getting ahead for my own good

I don't think that's a big deal. It will affect mostly the early adopters who generally have enough to upgrade their players if it becomes a big enough issue for them. Many of us haven't quite yet made the jump to Blu-Ray, partly because of that and partly because many classic titles are not yet available.
You be sure when I get the BR player it will be a 2.0. Or whatever's the latest version.

I've noticed that a lot of new titles have been released recently on blu-ray.
HD DVD is gone, forever. I'd invest in Blu-ray if you want to watch the ultimate, and it's a movie you want to experience the most out of (for what is top of the line on the market now).
"JUMPER" with Hayden Christensen looks GREAT on Blu-ray. The new Digital copy thing is compatible with your laptop computers.
