Critical thinking would have one question statements that use "always" and "never."

"LOL here we go again. First of all, yes they are different. DVDs were as low as $17.99 within two months of product launch. Second of all, Blu Ray did not just come out. It's been like two years. They are more expensive than DVDs were, period."

Okay I truly hate to disagree with you, but Yes, DVD's were expensive when they first came out, just as VHS was when it first came out. And as with all things in retail, the price begins to drop when said product has become the standard. DVD's came out back at the ass-end of the 90s. Now I was working at a certain electronics store back in 2002 when DVD's finally began to take off and VHS was rapidly becoming a thing of the past. And DVD's still were not going for $17.99, except for used maybe. That's nearly 4 years that DVD's were around before they really began to take off. Granted, at the end of the 90s only the super rich could afford the things, they were a novelty still, like mini-discs or Laser discs. Anyway, What must be understood here is that DVD had no competition except from VHS which was an inferior technology, so it was only a matter of time before it took over the market. Blu-Ray, however, had to contend not only with DVD, which is still rather new when compared with the last media change over, but also with HD-DVD. It was a battle to win the market, and Blu-Ray won the battle with HD-DVD, but it has not yet replaced DVD as the standard and until it does, the prices will continue to soar. Trust me, I have a PS3, I really want Blu-Ray prices to drop just as much, if not more, than the next guy, but it's gonna be at least another year. Of course, DVD hasn't helped matters much, seeing as how DVD prices have gone up since Blu-ray and HD-DVD came out.

Two months after DVD product launch, Warner Brothers had a whole slew of DVDs for 17.99. You are flat out wrong.

Being in the tech business and subscribing to many different computer magazines, Blu-Ray prices will not drop this year and maybe next year either. Until Sony sells the rights to Blu-Ray and allow the cheaper name brands to make Blue Ray players, prices for the players and movies will not go down and right now, Sony is being stupid and refuses to allow that to happen right now. They will eventually go and give the permission, but they think they can make a fortune first before they do it.

But a lot of different manufacturers are already making Blu Ray players...

I love that you're so confident, however, I believe you have been misinformed. might want to check your source. And no need to be rude.

My source is my memory. I was there. I saw it in Tower Records in the Gateway district of Portland Oregon with my own eyes.

oh, well memory... Since you put it that way. After all, it is the most reliable source of historic fact. raised_brow

I believe that you saw a promotion at a Tower Records, but I think you may have gotten your dates mixed up. Either way, it's really not worth the argument, it has no real relevance in regards to what's currently going on.

Yeah, many manufacturers are producing the players, so as I said, over the next two years, as Blu-ray begins to overtake the market and DVDs are slowly fazed out, we should see a decrease in prices.

That does sound to me like a special sale at Tower Records, not the regular sale price. Tower frequently used some titles as "loss leaders" to attract buyers and their prices for a lot of catalog titles were a bit higher, so they obviously hoped to make up for it.

Besides, the prices for many Blu-Ray titles are already under $20. Go to amazon.com, there's major titles selling for as little as $11.95, and that's not counting special sales when they have stuff like "Buy 3 Blu-Ray discs and get a 4th one free".

This is apparently from AICN, so beware. But if true, wonderful news....

"UPDATED!! Images From Newly Recovered METROPOLIS Footage!!

Merrick again...

This has already been referenced in Talkbacks, but for those who haven't heard, Kino (who released the 2002 restoration of the film (available HERE) just indicated that their previously announced Blu-Ray of METROPOLIS will now include all of the recovered/lost footage. It will be available on standard DVD as well.

It's not clear whether the discovered footage will be integrated directly into the film's narrative, or simple offered as supplemental material, although not offering a "complete" version of the film (new footage properly edited in) would be regarded by many as singularly lame - and I think Kino is too cool to half-ass something like this.

This news comes to us via a post from the fine folks over at The Digital Bits, which you can read HERE.

Also, an AICN reader named Aitam pointed us towards this YouTube video which features a ZDF TV (a German network) report on the recovered material. Needless to say, the piece is entirely in German...but the report does offer a few glimpses of the discovered material in motion, and gives us a sense of what the restoration team is up against with this one."
