Question: does the climactic shootout at the end of the DePalma-Pacino version of Scarface count?

Very well done scene. It still saddens me to this day about the assassin...

For the sake of this thread, no, Scarface doesn't count.

The "liquidation" of Bexhill at the end of Children of Men.
It's a simply stunning bit of cinematic art: the climactic sequence is all contained in a six-minute long tracking shot that doesn't cut away at all, and which follows the lead character around and through the crumbling streets of an immigrant ghetto as the British army fights a bloody and terrifyingly realistic urban battle against a cityfull of feuding gangs and paramilitary groups.
Apart from the monumental size and scope of the scene (the choreography of which must have been mind-bogglingly difficult to execute) it is also a really interesting take on battle scenes in general. Apart from it being an urban battle, which aren't too common or too well-done in general, it is seen entirely from the perspective of a single civilian caught in the crossfire. We as the audience are brought into the sequence in a way that makes it seem like we are there, ducking and dodging and running and hiding around corners and in and out of buses and behind rubble and through buildings. It was the first time that I've ever seen anything quite like it, and I don't think I'll likely ever see something as successful as it again.

That makes me want to go watch Children of Men right now.

QFT.The Battle of Bexhill is a beautifully executed cinematic urban combat sequence.
My favourite movie battles, in no particular order, are:
Omaha Beach-Saving Private Ryan
The Battle of the Denmark Strait-HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Hood vs the Bismark-Sink the Bismark!
The Battle of Yavin-ANH
The Battle of Endor-ROTJ
The Battle of Coruscant-ROTS
The Sieges of Helm's Deep, Isengard and Minas Tirith TTT/ROTK
The Battle of Zion- The Matrix Revolutions
EDIT: Forgot the Battle of Stirling from Braveheart

QFT. The battle in Germania is the Omaha Beach of sword and sandal epics. As for small unit actions, this battle rules.

Another great battle. I love it when Phoenix goes "woo ooo" when Maximus is showing off.
My favourite battle on the small screen has to be from band of brothers. The scene where Maj. Winters massacres hundreds of troops is the bloodies battle I have seen on tv.
Winters vs. Germany

It's kind of hard to pick out specific instances in 300 since its a look inside a single engagement, but there's no denying that 300 has some VERY beautifully executed combat sequences.
