Guilty as Charged: 21 Great Crime Thrillers

"Gone Baby Gone" (2007)

"Ben Affleck's fine adaptation of Dennis Lehane's novel features an Oscar-nominated performance by Amy Ryan as a the druggie mother of a kidnapped tot, as well as a star turn by kid brother Casey, playing a cocky Boston private eye who gets torn between tribal loyalties. He manages to hold onto his integrity, but only at the cost of all he holds dear."

I've tried to get through a few of Lehane's novels and haven't managed it yet.

Haven't seen the movie, either.

Another countdown i'm looking forward to, Zaz. applause

Gone, Baby, Gone... The title rings a bell. But when I saw the name Ben Affleck I probably ran for the hills tongue .

I suspect he's a better director than he is an actor.

The problem isn't his acting. It's the fact that he chose **** for roles. He needs more roles like Chasing Amy, Good Will Hunting, and Hollywoodland.

Regrettably, I haven't seen Gone Baby Gone. But I hear it's great.

24. "Zodiac" (2007)

"David Fincher's examination of the real-life Zodiac case is much more like All the President's Men than his own Seven. Here, obsessive sleuths — reporter Paul Avery (Robert Downey Jr.), cop David Toschi (Mark Ruffalo), and editorial cartoonist Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal) — spend years trying to find the serial killer, reminding moviegoers that, sometimes, there's enough suspense just watching brainy people try to solve a puzzle."

I obviousbly have to see this, and soon.

Next: "Infernal Affairs" (2002)

"If you loved Martin Scorsese's The Departed, you should really check out the Hong Kong original. Shot for shot, it's very similar — as is the plot about dueling moles within the police and the mob trying to ferret each other out — but Andrew Lau's version is much leaner, tighter, and faster."

Haven't seen this. (Bet Django has.) Love to see it.

I saw this, laughably bad. Horrible movie. The story never has a chance to develop and it moves from one plot point to the next with no good reason for anything happening.

and I'm sorry, but a movie can't be good when a dramatic moment causes a roomful of people to laugh non stop for 5 minutes.

"There Will Be Blood" caused an audience to laugh (nervously). Still think it was good.

This wasn't nervous laughter... this was, "omg, that might have been the dumbest scene in cinematic history" laughter.

So did the American version have the same scene?

it did. only in the american version, you jump from shock rather then get cramps in your stomach from nonstop laughter.

I disagree with the Armenian. I haven't yet seen the remake in its entirety, but I thought Infernal Affairs was fantastic.

I don't know how you can praise Scorsese's version on plot or characterization and deride the original. Scorsese adds nothing to his version except some Rolling Stones & Pink Floyd. He dumbs down the religious aspect of the original which is surprising considering how strong his Catholic background appears in his films. The ending of Scorsese's is essentially the same as the one mandated by the Chinese censors. The Andy Lau/Matt Damon character has to pay for his crimes, which betrays the original theme of eternal suffering. The funniest part in either film is Mark Wahlberg acing like a tough guy & actually getting an Oscar nomination for a cliched one note performance. Oh wait I also forgot the horrible portrayal of the Chinese gangsters in Scorsese's, they somehow managed to find actors that can't speak Chinese. Or the fact that William Monohan claimed that he never saw the original.

The original film owes a lot to John Woo's Hard Boiled. However it delves deeper into the characters than Woo's film. The twists and turns are handled better than the American version. Also Hong Kong is, was, & always shall be cooler than Boston.

Hard Boiled is badass. I much prefer Infernal Affairs to The Departed, but Western remakes are rarely better than the original.

Next: "From Hell" (2001)

"Johnny Depp is another old-time detective in the Hughes brothers' crimson-drenched adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel. In pursuit of Jack the Ripper, Depp's Scotland Yard constable uncovers a scandal that could bring down the whole British Empire. His reward: heartbreak, madness, and premonitions of a century's worth of violence and depravity."

I haven't seen this and would like to.

RE: Infernal Affairs

Great movie. There's a lot of aspects that are better than The Departed. Although, I like The Departed for it's dark humor and its density, Infernal Affairs is just a beautiful film, espescially for a crime thriller. Chris Doyle's cinematography helps make the movie. And it's so tightly written. I hear Infernal Affairs 2 is The Godfather Part II of the series. I'm anxious to sit and watch this trilogy.
