OFT. It's my favorite Scorsese film.

I've seen three Scorsese films-this, Casino, and Goodfellas. Personally, Casino's my favorite of the three, although Departed IS pretty good.

Next: "Vertigo"

"Those who think of Jimmy Stewart as only a nice guy need to check out Hitchcock's intense psychodrama, starring Stewart as an ex-cop obsessed with a woman resembling his dead lover. From our hero's tortured mental state to the movie's stunning twists, it's Hitch's most personal work -- and his most disturbing."

Yes...but this doesn't leap to mind when I think of 'crime dramas', though there is fraud and murder at its heart. Psychodrama, yes.

Next: 14. "Reservoir Dog"

"With its witty banter and stylized violence, this bank heist film made Quentin Tarantino a household name. And its legendary torture scene puts even Jack Bauer to shame. When was the last time Jack cut someone's ear off while listening to the feel-good tune 'Stuck in the Middle With You'? That's what we thought."

Haven't seen it...

Next: 13. "Marathon Man"

"Dustin Hoffman shines as a marathoner whose running skills come in handy when he's caught up in a conspiracy involving priceless diamonds and a deranged Nazi dentist (Laurence Olivier) with a penchant for torturous "oral surgeries." "Is it safe" to go to the dentist after watching this flick? Yes, but we don't recommend it."

Hoffman's way too old for this role, and I hate dentist movies.

The producer estimated the dental torture scenes cost 40 million dollars of box office revenue due to word of mouth (no pun intended) from people who had seen the film and suffered.

IS IT SAFE?

William Goldman's book on screenwriting (he wrote the screenplay for Marathon Man) has some chilling behind the scenes passages about Hoffman's on set ego raging out of control.

I hope they don't ever remake this one.

Ditto "Arachnophobia". Terrible box office flop. And the reason is...a very, very, very many people *are* arachnophobics.

Very good and creepy film. I'm not afraid of the dentist so I'm ok with it (same for Aracnaphobia... what. I don't get arachnaphobia) Roy Shieder was great in this.

I have read William Goldman's book as well and yeah, Hoffman was apparently a royal terror on this set. I liked the description of hoy Shieder just sat by quietly.

12. "Double Indemnity"

"If it's not the 'Godfather' of film noir, it's certainly the godmother of every twisty, double- or triple-cross happy tale of murder and deceit to land in theaters since 1944. Renaissance director Billy Wilder's enthralling thriller is told in flashback, but damned if we're not staggered by the results every time."

Jennifer Jason Leigh, in a talk on Barbara Stanwyck on TCM, had some very interesting things to say about this film: that McMurray is drawn to Stanwyck, because she is his own dark, uninhibited, uncontrolled side. And...very likely.

Isn't that the reason anyone is drawn to the 'bad boy' or 'bad girl'?

So I've seen this film but not in like 5 years... I should see it again. Billy Wilder rocked so hard.

It's a very good film. Fred MacMurray is not one of my favourite leading men, but here he is perfect; Stanwyk and Robinson could not be bettered for their roles, either.

One of the Noir greats.

11. "L. A. Confidential"

"Curtis Hanson captures the spirit of the original 1940s film noirs in this enthralling flick about police corruption and virtue ... and the often thin line that divides them. His primary vehicle for doing so is the electrifying Russell Crowe, who plays a badass cop full of equal parts rage, goodness and bullet holes."

A very, very good movie.

I think that L.A. Confidential was my most enjoyable movie experience of the last 15 years or so. The movie just blew me away. I love the part near the end where Ed Exley shoots his boss in the back, then holds his badge up for the cops. Outstanding.

I would just say, however, that for whatever reason, this film just isn't as good on the small screen, and I don't quite know why. But that first time I saw it in the cinema was magical.

Would have easily captured Best Picture honors in many other years, except that it ran headlong into the monolithic force that was Titanic (which deserved Best Picture, I should note).

A great film, and one that I regrettably did not see on the big screen.
