Do you really think it's fair to say Deniro completely went downhill after he stopped working with Scorsese?
I really think this is one of the best collaborations. Deniro never played the same character twice in a Scorsese film

I'd be really interested to know why Scorcese and DeNiro haven't worked together in so long. There's always a "behind the scenes" reason we don't know. Or at least, often there is. Could it be because DeNiro began lampooning his screen image/ Or because he started producing? Or directing? Maybe the right script didn't come along? I wonder what DeNiro thought of the Departed.
I agree they've certainly made some awesome films. I think after awhile though, people like to work with other people, or things get stale. I've often heard musicians talk about "the reason the group broke up was we all got tired of looking at each other's faces and besides we wanted to play with other musicians and bounce around some fresh creative energy." The Beatles commented that they'd been around each around five or six years before the band really exploded and became known to the public, so their relationships were wearing thin. Especially considering all they'd been through, the pressure, the intensity of it all.
I think the same applies to directors and actors. I'd like to see Burton work with Christian Bale on something. But first Depp will have to be run over by a truck.
I think there's definitely a great working connection between DiCaprio and Scorcese, they're comfortable with each other. And why wouldn't they want to work together? They're both among the best at what they do.

Zaz posted: Martin Scorsese-Robert De Niro
"While De Niro’s film choices these days leave something to be desired, that wasn’t always the case. For those who can remember, there was an 18-year period (1973 to 1991) where his collaboration with Scorsese meant the movie was deemed an instant classic. “Mean Streets,” “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” “GoodFellas” are just some of the films that had cineastes licking their chops. Three of De Niro’s Oscar nominations come with Scorsese calling the shots, and while the actor has seen his cache fall in recent years, Scorsese continues to shine — this time with Leonardo DiCaprio (“Gangs of New York,” “The Aviator,” “The Departed”) as the actor who fits comfortably working with the Italian maestro."
They started to repeat themselves after awhile, so Scorsese moved on.
Scorsese moved on?
Scorsese wanted De Niro for the role of Costello...

DeNiro is overrated. I have seen cameos on Baywatch that are more impressive.
Scorsese is awesome, Gangs is one of the most chilling movies I have ever seen, it surely an amazing piece of work. Alot of flicks like Goodfellas will always be seen as "gangster flicks", nothing wrong with that, but Gangs easily transcends that label. Departed was seriously well done, having seen the chinese version first made it slightly less potent for me, but that has nothing to do with the quality of the director.

I never thought I would ever read that Robert DeNiro was an "overrated" actor. Even the concept is hilarious.

...
You've seen cameos on Baywatch more impressive then Taxi Driver and Raging Bull?
And I like how the two Scorsese movies you bring up as being great aren't even a top 5 Scorsese movie. lol

But the leads are played by younger actors.

The two of them are excellent. Taxi Driver is extraordinary. Even when De Niro isn't center stage they make terrific films together. I may be alone on this, but I find Goodfellas to be far superior to the Godfather.

De Niro was 33 when Taxi Driver came out.
DiCaprio was 32 when The Departed came out.
is that really much of a difference?

I could see that. Bale had Burtonesque qualities in The Machinist and American Psycho. Yeah, I could definitely see that.

Next: "Pedro Almodovar-Penelope Cruz
"There’s no one who knows the curves of Cruz’s beautiful frame more than fellow Spaniard Almodovar, who has turned his muse into an international star. “All About My Mother” may not have gotten the Stateside attention it deserved, but “Volver,” which earned Cruz her first Oscar nomination, rectified that. Almodovar knows women like no other male director, and his skill lies in teaching us what makes these great ladies tick — whether they’re moms, daughters, hookers or housewives. Cruz lights up the screen no matter who’s in the director’s chair, but she blossoms with her compatriot calling the shots. The two will team up again in 2009 with “Broken Hugs,” a revenge thriller that’s already on my must-see list."

Didn't Almodovar make more movies with Antonio Banderas than with Penelope Cruz?
