On the Waterfront is my favorite movie of all time.

I NEED to see a streetcar named desire though.

Brando and Leigh are both absolutely extraordinary, but it's a downer of a movie.

But worth seeing.

Next: Tim Burton and Johnny Depp

This is how they started:

[on "Edward Scissorhands"] "Twentieth-Century Fox demanded Tom Cruise[4][5] The studio wanted a "bankable" actor and Burton felt it was best "to be open about casting." Burton claims Cruise wasn't his ideal choice but found him remarkably interesting; though claims Cruise wouldn't stop asking questions about the character. It got to the point where Burton found it impossible to work with him.[4] Cruise also wanted the ending to be "happier"[6] and in addition, cited scheduling conflicts with Days of Thunder[5] while blaming Edward's "lack of virility".[3] In due time, Michael Jackson expressed having interest for the role but was ignored. Tom Hanks then turned it down in favor of The Bonfire of the Vanities. William Hurt and Robert Downey, Jr. had both openly expressed interest.[3] Although Burton was unfamiliar with Depp's previous work, Burton was impressed with his "subtlety and ability to act with his eyes," citing that "for a character that doesn't speak a lot; eyes are very important."[4] In 1989, Depp read the script and "wept like a newborn". Meeting Burton and producer Denise Di Novi in Los Angeles, California, he and Burton got on very well, and he was cast a few weeks later.[7] In preparation for the role, Depp watched many Charlie Chaplin films to study creating sympathy without dialogue.[8] Studio executives were so worried about Edward's image that they tried to keep pictures of Depp in full costume under wraps until release of the film.[9] Burton was so impressed with Depp's performance that he would go on to include the actor in five later films.[7]"

Cruise's complaints about Edward's lack of virility had me literally rolling on the floor shrieking with laughter. Talk about not getting the point.

Depp and Burton have also made:

"Ed Wood"
"Sleepy Hollow"
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"
"The Corpse Bride"
"Sweeney Todd"

Depp tends to get on with his directors, as he has worked with several of them more than once.

I always wonder if Depp's association with Burton is the reason for his overwhelmingly bizarre film roles, or a result of it... maybe a bit of both. In any case, these two seem made for each other. And they've certainly produced some very good films together. I think of the modern actor/director combos, this one is probably the most solidly linked.

Depp is godfather to Tim's son. They're tight. Practically family.

I liked the earlier collaborations a great deal(Ed Wood,Edward Scissorhands,Sleepy Hollow) but I just am kind of tired of it now. Depp isn't creating new characters for Burton, his Sweeny Todd was Depp's conversational voice

The Burton/Depp movies I've seen, I've loved. So I would say it's a great collaboration.

I haven't seen Sweeney Todd yet but of the others only Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a misfire, mainly because Depp doesn't have the character right and Burton doesn't have the tone right. So rather than adding to each others genius, they did the reverse with that one, I think.

But whatever; for Scissorhands and Wood alone these two go down in the annals of film history.

Starting with "Mean Streets", they collaborated on:

"Taxi Driver"
"New York, New York"
"Raging Bull"
"King of Comedy"
"Good Fellas"
"Cape Fear"
"Casino"

These two are loaded with talent, but there is one stillborn misfire ("New York"), one misguided remake ("Cape Fear") and another which suggests that neither of them have a sense of humour ("King of Comedy"). By the time of "Casino", a virtual remake of "Goodfellas", things were getting rather stagnant, and Scorsese moved to another leading man (who shall be discussed next). I am not a fan of "Raging Bull" but I am in the decided minority. The other three movies are very good indeed.

Three movies: "The Gangs of New York", "The Aviator", and "The Departed"

Two coming up: "Shutter Island" and "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt"

Scorsese began looking for a younger leading man, and found a congenial one in yet another Italian American, DiCaprio. I admit I bailed in the middle of watching their first two movies, and haven't seen last one. It's not, I think, DiCaprio's fault. Scorsese is beginning to have script problems, and it shows. "Gangs" was a misfire, and I confess I was quite bored by "The Aviator". However, they both should be perfect for "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt", based on a very good non-fiction book.

It's so obvious that Titanic could never have been made today, because DiCaprio and Winslet would have commanded such, well, titanic salaries. Both of them are among the great actors of their generation, and DiCaprio has done great work with Scorsese. James Cameron sure did buy low and sell high in 1997.

The Departed is definitely the best of their collaberations, and my favorite Scorsese film (I know I'll catch flak for that). I'd check it out, Zaz.

I was surprised to find myself engrossed by The Aviator. I enjoyed The Departed as well. Gangs of New York , on the other hand...
