Downey (as a white actor playing a black character): What do you mean, "You people"?
Black actor: What do you mean, "What do you mean, 'You people'?"
This thing looks freaking hilarious.

There were parts of this movie I laughed so hard I had tears in my years. I'm not exaggerating.
It's that friggin' funny.
I made some comments on it in the "what was the last movie you saw" thread. One of the deadliest, on target commentaries on Hollywood I've ever seen.
Incidentally, every PENNY of it's 92 million dollar budget is on the screen. That's an awful lot of money to spend on a comedy, but it was worth it.

Funniest movie of the year. Tom Cruise stole the show and hasn't been that entertaining on-screen in over a decade. RDJ was great as well.

Absolutely.
One of the little things I got a kick out of it was the reference to the fact the director of this monster "Apocalypse Now" type high-budget action movie "Tropic Thunder" - had previously done. . ."London plays." That's typical Hollywood logic! Which is NO logic! The guy's done some successful stage directing? Good. Give him a humongous movie to direct with stunts and special effects and things he's never handled before - even on a smaller scale - on film.
Stiller is savvy about Hollywood's idiocy and seemed to have had an awful lot of fun ridiculing it. And that's just one small example among numerous ones in the film.
Cruise stunned me. I think it was because he (!) completely disappeared in the role. I guess that's why I could stand him. And loved his performance.

One of the funniest films of the year. 2008 has given us a trifecta of hilarious comedy films: Step Brothers, Pineapple Express, and Tropic Thunder.

I didn't think it was all that great. Most of Downey's amusing parts were all in the trailer, and the pacing was off.
But Cruise was indeed hilarious.

I think the best part of this movie is the Watchmen trailer before it. And now that I've read the first couple chapters of the graphic novel, I know what's going on in certain parts of it!

I wouldn't throw Step Brothers in there, myself.
I adored this movie, though - Downey is great hamming it up as Lincoln Osiris, but he's even better as plain old Kirk Lazarus. As far as humour goes, I wouldn't call Tropic Thunder a pure comedy; it's sort of a spoof/satire/action movie to me, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Well, to each his own. I found Step Brothers to be absolutely hilarious, probably Ferrel's funniest film. (Even though the best stuff comes from John C. Reily)
