Paired with Julie Christie in Doctor Zhivago and Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl, Sharif went from Peter O'Toole's desert cat in Lawrence of Arabia to a full-fledged matinee idol. His French-Egyptian ancestry only added caché to his swarthy-exotic handsomeness, which easily crossed cultural barriers, but it could be argued that his key erotic asset was his focused intensity as an actor."
Sharif's real name is actually Michel Shalhoub. He adopted his current name when he converted to Islam when he got married. Very handsome actor who can in fact play just about any nationality. (In fact, he plays a German in one of my favorite very bad movies, "The Night of the Generals") "Focused intensity" seems an odd description, because Sharif, especially in his lesser roles, often seems quite wooden. When he likes the role, as he does in "Lawrence of Arabia", he makes a much better impression.

Brooks is hard to see, because her main work is in silent and very early sound films. She was a dancer in the beginning, and later became an actress, though probably way too honest to be a success in Hollywood.
