Oh dear... I've just watched the mini-series. It is certainly different from the '71 film. Military conspiracies, romance, drug-addicted loose-cannon reporters, not to mention time-travel and worm-holes. The script was overcooked, imo.
Also, at times I found the miniseries unintentionally funny; the close up of the severed thumb being thrown though the air was a high-point for me.
Updating this with lots of new ideas was a mistake.

Agreed. He needs to stop writing about issues and go back to writing fun techno-thrillers full of carnage and mayhem. State of Fear and Next were OK, but the last truly fun book that he wrote was Prey.

Now I though Next was a little bit return to form for him after State of Fear , I had no trouble following the characters in Next, the book sucked me right in... I do like Prey, but not after the first reading, it was a struggle to get into it, actually I listened to a unabridged audio tape of the book on a long drive and found it much more enjoyable, then I reread the book and enjoyed it.

Edge of Darkness
That's the problem with plutonium, Craven; it's limited in its application. It's not user-friendly. But as a vehicle for regaining one's self-respect, oh, it's got a lot going for it. Damn right I turned it into a bomb.
A BBC miniseries first broadcast in 1985, Edge of Darkness was a political conspiracy thriller written by Troy Kennedy Martin, the creator of classic British drama series Z-Cars, and writer of films Kelly’s Heroes and The Italian Job. It was directed by Martin Campbell (Goldeneye, Casino Royale), and starred Bob Peck (Jurassic Park) , Joe Don Baker (various Bond films), and Joanne Whalley (Willow).
Plot
After police inspector Ronald Craven sees his daughter murdered in front of his eyes, he embarks on a personal investigation that soon mires him in the world of government conspiracies and political machinations, all the while revealing a side of his daughter he never knew existed.
My Opinion
This is a fantastic miniseries, easily one of the top ten the BBC has made over the years. It is slow to start off, but gradually picks up speed as the episodes continue to become a gripping thriller. The script is superb, the performances outstanding (you won’t forget Joe Don Baker’s flamboyant C.I.A. agent in a hurry – he’s really wonderful in this), and it has a music score by Eric Clapton and Michael Kamen that is incredibly atmospheric. Although having a character converse with a dead person has now become cliché, here is the first place I remember seeing it done, and it is done very well.
I cannot recommend this series enough. See it before the new movie version (starring Mel Gibson) comes out and no doubt ruins its good name.

I need to see if I can get this on DVD; "Kelly's Heroes" being one of my guilty pleasures.

I've not seen Lonesome Dove or The Last Enemy. I've heard good things about Lonesome Dove, but I'm not such a big fan of the more realistic, demythologised style of western that is in vogue now. Is it depressing?

Steven Spielberg’s Taken
They have no concept of kindness or cruelty. No way of seeing beyond the 'oneness' of all that energy...
Taken was a miniseries concerning four generations of families, and their encounters with extra-terrestrial life. It aired on America’s Sci-Fi Channel in 2002, and was written by Leslie Bohem, who also co-produced along with Steven Spielberg. It won the 2003 Emmy award for Outstanding Miniseries, and was nominated for a Golden Globe the same year. It had an ensemble cast which included Dakota Fanning, Eric Close, Matt Frewer, and Julie Benz.
Plot (from Wikipedia)
Taken is a story spanning five decades and four generations, centering on three families: the Keys, the Crawfords, and the Clarkes. World War II veteran Russell Keys is plagued by nightmares of his abduction by extraterrestrials during the war; the Roswell incident transforms Owen Crawford from ambitious Air Force captain to amoral shadow government conspirator; the unhappily-married Sally Clarke is impregnated by an alien visitor. As the decades go by, the heirs of each are affected by the machinations of the aliens, culminating with the birth of Allie Keys, the final product of the aliens' experimentation and the key to their future.
My Opinion
I thought this was an excellent miniseries. The cast was very good, with Dakota Fanning being particularly memorable as young Allie (good child actors are hard to find; ones that are not annoying are a rare gift from the drama gods). But as I said, everyone is good in this cast.
I loved the scope of the series, though of course the advancing generations meant that you didn’t have much continuity between one episode and the next – something that could have killed a lesser series. The characters were good, the writing intelligent, and the action never felt forced or threatened to break the episodes into set-pieces.
Anybody else a fan?

I saw this when it first aired. Very cool idea and really well put together, as is to be expected from Spielberg.

I thought "Taken" was merely OK. Could have been good or even great if there was better focus, and the middle generation was kinda bland compared to the early ones and the later ones (when Fanning started to feature in the story). Indeed, I struggled with the middle episodes, thank God the later ones returned my interest.
Still, the evil family provided the most interesting characters. And as mentioned, Fanning was good.

I think I found the early episodes the least interesting. I certainly remember finding the first episode a little "meh", despite the presence of Eric Close (I was a fan of Now and Again; why did they kill it so soon?).
