Wow, I'm surprised. I thought the majority thought was the TTT was the least of the three, as it is in my eyes. For me, it is hard to decide between FOTR and ROTK. FOTR starts off slow, but once you get to the Council of Elrond, it really hits its stride. The beginning of ROTK is good because of the great build up to the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. But once that battle is over, there isn't much left for anyone not named Frodo or Sam. So its hard for me to decide between the two.

TTT is easily the worst of the three. And ROTK edges out FOTR because it has so many of my favorite scenes in it: Gandalf's arrival at Minas Tirith, Frodo and Sam at Minas Morgul, the fight for Osgiliath, the battle of the Pelennor fields, Mount Doom, Aragorn's coronation, etc. It's about as close to perfection for a fantasy film as you can get.

ROTK is the weakest of the trilogy. The Balrog scene in FOTR is easily the most tension filled scene in the trilogy. The Battle of Helm's Deep far surpasses the drama and anticipation of Pelenor Feilds. TTT is my fav.

I, too, think TTT is the best of the LotR trilogy.

Most people I've talked to feel ROTK is best, and I personally agree. Except for my cousin he thinks TTT is best. Of course, they're all awesome in my opinion.

I think that the second half of FOTR -- from the Fellowship leaving Rivendell to the final shot of Sam and Frodo in the Emen Muil -- is the best the trilogy ever gets. It's never as dramatic, as expressive of character, as action-packed or as moving as in that hour-and-a-half of Caradhras/Moria/Lorien/Falls of Rauros.
Overall, though, TTT is the best film, since it works as a whole from start to finish, and is nicely balanced between character, story progression, action and suspense.
ROTK, like the others, is a masterwork, but IMO its missteps -- among these the inexplicably crippled/deformed Orc General, the incredibly well-lit cavern of Shelob (just where IS that brilliant white light coming from in this underground cave?), and the "skull flood" in the Paths of the Dead -- mark it as the weakest link.

see, I don't know why, but I enjoy the first half of FOTR more then any other part of the trilogy.

I was just assuming you were experiencing some dyslexia, that's all. Because no one who is not dyslexic could say that Helm's Deep was better than Pelennor Fields.

The Battle of Pelennor Fields is the silliest battle I have seen in any film ever. Ridiculous.
