Neither are great films but at least the first one is fun. I found the second one to be a complete retread

Both are good. One reason why I like the first one more is BENI. To me, almost everything he said was frickin hilarious.
Forgot how it goes exactly but his first meeting with The Mummy is a classic:

Beni was cool and I liked the interaction between him and O'Connell. I do like The Mummy Returns over the the first film. I wished they had spent more time on the scorpion king effects though. It doesn't bother me as much as it used to, but when I first saw the film, I was pretty much saying wtf when I first saw him.

I'm a fan of both films (not as much of The Scorpion King), and I feel the second is better, but I'm kind of surprised that so many others feel that way. When it came out, most of the reviews kept talking about how the second wasn't as good as the first. Hopefully the next one, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, will be as good.

I don't count The Scorpion King as part of the series. It's a spinoff, which wasn't nearly as good as it could have been. I hope the 3rd Mummy film rules.

The Scorpion King could have been good. It should have been a tale about a warrior that becomes a hero amongst his people and rises to be a great king. But his lust for even more power causes him to make a deal with the devil, which in turn causes his downfall. It could have been very Macbeth-esque (not saying it would be of the same quality, but the same type of story).
What we got was a crappy action/comedy.

I liked the first one a bit more, I think, because it still masqueraded a bit as a horror. What I think is truly odd is making a third movie with the original cast sans Rachel Weisz. And then the antagonist is Jet Li. And it's set in China.
That can't be a Mummy movie.

I like the first one more.
I think it'd be cool to see a version of The Mummy that's more in line with something like Bram Stoker's Dracula, or Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow, or the upcoming Wolf Man flick.

The thing about the Scorpion King is that they failed to tell the only story really worth telling about the character- how he fell from a good King to a conqueror and made his pact with Anubis. The first film doesn't do anything about this (though might have some vague justification for showing his rise towards power), and supposedly the sequel they're working on screws up AGAIN and is going further back with a prequel to when he was younger. Terrible, terrible choices, there.
