My opinion has long been that, had it not been for the "Indiana Jones" brand name, Temple of Doom would have been a box office flop and, at best, a cult classic. Outside of the cinematography (which is stunning) it just isn't a particularly good movie. What saves it is the character of Indiana Jones. He's able to elevate a lot of truly horrendous scenes into something bordering on tolerable.

As for The Last Crusade, while I didn't exactly like the shift toward a less gritty tone, it is still a better film in terms of plot, character and theme than Temple of Doom. Raiders, while it is a more "simple" film than the other two, is still much better crafted from start to finish.

A red-hot poker inches from your face can have a sobering effect, too, as I understand.

Also, look at her face after she shoots that guy and tell me she's not still a little out of it.

Ok, fess up, Zaz. No one says that. No one. You need to work on your attempts at viral proverbs.

You know, polish the brain's fruit, as they say.

The second problem is the general lack of realism. Sure, Raiders has its moments of unreality -- how did Marion go from tottering drunk to stone-cold sober inside of a second and a half? -- but in Temple many things defy physics, and everything seems to be played for laughs. The bulletproof gong, the flying raft, the ripped-out heart that leaves no wound, the roller-coaster-ride mine cart, the convenient arrival of the British army -- these flagrantly unbelievable cartoon tropes add up, one after the other, to strain credulity in the mind of the audience. Raiders, for all its fantastical elements and unlikely coincidences, feels real. Temple feels like the writers having fun at the typewriter.

See, I had less of an issue with the fantastic elements of the second film as it took place, chronologically, prior to Raiders -- so obviously this was where Indy was going to get his brush with the fantastical. It wasn't that he DIDN'T believe in the supernatural in Raiders -- it's that he didn't ascribe them to the Ark. Once he figured it all out, he knew bad mojo was going to go down.

Granted, some of the slapsticky elements were a bit too much for me, but ultimately that's part and parcel of the serial films.

Since I can't think of anymore sequels, I've found a list of the 25 best sequels, and then we will debate whether they are better or not:

25. Die Hard 2

t doesn't feel like Christmas without a tree, eggnog and John McClane (Bruce Willis) giving terrorists the beatings of a lifetime. Here he fights to free a snowy Dulles Airport from a group of turncoat U.S. soldiers. The lines are quotable, the action frenetic and the ass-kickings vintage McClane.

Is it a worthy sequel? Yes.

Is it better than the original? No.

The first is the best; the rest are just variations on a theme.

What the ****? Die Hard 2 is horrible. Not funny, makes stuff up (Glocks are not made of plastic, and can't be carried through airport metal detectors without bringing the entire USG down on you tongue ) and is ridiculously convoluted.

They took the perfect setup from the first film and made it horridly complicated.

Nothing compares to the first. Although I love how each sequel gets bigger in scale.

Not better than the original. But the ending is the best ending to any film ever.

I just love that the bad guy is played by the Grim Reaper from Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (which, BTW, ought to show up in this thread at some point - unless it has already and I missed it).
