Ever since POA, everyone expects the HP films to to be better than the one before. The first two were good, but were definitely more geared toward younger audiences, starting with this one, it became darker and more adult, as did the novels.

POA is a film; that is, the scenes in the book are translated in a kinetic way. The first half of the film is really brilliant. The last half less so, but it is by far the best of the movies, and is especially better than the dire GOF, which followed it.

One of the best children's fantasy films of all time, and by far the standout of the series -- largely due to the unique visuals Cuaron applied to the film, including the seasonal vignettes with the Womping Willow, and the various scene changes in and out of mirrors and window panes. The last act of the movie, in which the same climactic events are viewed from a shifted perspective, is exhilerating and utterly unique.

It's a pretty damn good movie. Dementors and Buckbeak FTW! By the way, where would you guys rank OOTP in the series? POA > OOTP > GOF?

I see OOTP as the second best HP movie right behind POA as well.

Not having read the books, it was this film that sold me on the series. The more grounded elements (kids in normal clothing, etc) combined with the darker tone and fun time travel elements made for a solid film.

I'd go:
POA
COS
OOTP
GOF
SS
I like the look and tone of the movies more since Chris Columbus left, which can probably be contributed to Alfonso Cuaron. OOTP felt kinda rushed, and it's my favorite of the books. GOF I think is a little choppy, although I love the final fifteen minutes or so. And SS didn't really do anything creative and adapting the first book. And the visual style was wrong and too clean. In the books the mundane collides with the fantasty making it that more fantastic. The mundane part didn't show up in Columbus's movies for the most part.
I hope I'm making sense.

If we're ranking them, I think they're all generally of a piece, with PoA edging the others out by dint of its visual flair and engaging storyline. Probably I'd go:
1. Prisoner of Azkaban -- The best in the series dramatically, emotionally, and in terms of craftsmanship. On par with The Wizard of Oz or Spirited Away as a classic children's fantasy film.
2. Goblet of Fire -- Many people's least favorite installment I find to be second only to PoA. GoF has the best performances and seems the most real-world of the HP films. The graveyard climax is some of the most stirring fantasy cinema ever seen.
3. Order of the Phoenix -- Also gets a lot of criticism for being so different from the book, but I think it's a great movie! A 900 page book, a two-hour movie: you're gonna lose some stuff. I love the polychromatic palette especially.
4. Chamber of Secrets -- I used to watch this one more than any of the others, just because it's so much darn fun. I probably watched it 3 times before I finally figured out the plot! Another classic film, if a bit unclear in places.
5. Sorcerer's Stone -- Not a bad film by a long shot, simply not as dramatic as the others. Watching it again after seeing the later installments is like re-visiting someone else's childhood. It's a very whimsical movie, which is out of fashion these days, but it too deserves its classic status.

Azkaban remains my favorite HP flick, although OotP was a very good adaptation as well (and I didn't like that book all that much).

Given the immense difficulties of adapting the book, I thought OOTP was a pretty decent movie.

The best Harry Potter is hands down the first film because it follows the book the best. Prisoner of Azkaban is the best book.
