Date Posted: 1/20 5:58am Subject: RE: Famous Canadian Actors: Now Disc. Ryan Gosling
Ryan Thomas Gosling (born November 12, 1980) is a Canadian actor. He is best known for his roles in The Notebook, Half Nelson, and Lars and the Real Girl.

Gosling has had no formal training as an actor. His first acting experience was in the 1990s revival of The Mickey Mouse Club, for which he auditioned on a whim at the age of thirteen. As a result, he appeared in the show alongside Britney Spears, Keri Russell, Nikki DeLoach, Tony Lucca, Lindsey Alley, Christina Aguilera, JC Chasez and Justin Timberlake in the show's sixth and seventh seasons. The story goes that Gosling was such a bad influence on the future popstrels that their mothers complained to the studio. 'I was just telling them what I'd heard about sex,' he says. 'You know, the positions and stuff.' Disney, unsurprisingly, hauled young Gosling into its offices: 'Disney had a meeting with me, and they were like, You're not Disney material. We're gonna kick you off the show if you say anything sexual again. I'm f---ing 12. All I care about is sex! How can I not talk about it? I don't know what they expected.' Later he appeared in other television series including Flash Forward, Young Hercules, and Ron Oliver's Goosebumps and Breaker High. His fame spread to the United States after he starred in the 2001 controversial drama The Believer, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. This success led to future films including Remember the Titans, The Slaughter Rule, and Murder by Numbers. Because of his turn as the romantic lead in the 2004 film The Notebook, Gosling was named one of People magazine's Fifty Hottest Bachelors and the Show West Male Star of Tomorrow.

In preparation for his role as Dan Dunne, a drug-addicted, junior high school history teacher in the 2006 film Half Nelson, Gosling moved to Brooklyn, shadowed a middle school teacher, and studied the Civil Rights Movement (a subject with which his character is fascinated). In March 2007, Gosling won the Best Actor category at the Spirit Awards (formerly known as the Independent Spirit Awards) for his role in the movie. For the same role he was nominated for an Academy Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Broadcast Film Critics Association award as best actor. He also became the first Mickey Mouse Club member to be nominated for an Oscar.

Recently, Gosling has starred in the film Fracture alongside Anthony Hopkins. He was to begin filming for The Lovely Bones in October 2007, but has since been replaced by Mark Wahlberg. It was subsequently reported that director Peter Jackson fired him because he was "too demanding". A few days later, however, Gosling denied these claims, explaining that his young age was behind the decision to replace him in the film. He said, "The age of the character versus my real age was always a concern of mine. Peter and I tried to make it work and ultimately it just didn't. I think the film is much better off with Mark Wahlberg in that role. Peter Jackson is an incredible filmmaker and I'm here to tell you that he has things up his sleeve that are going to blow people's minds. I'm going to be the first person in line to buy tickets." In 2007, Gosling was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Gosling made a surprise cameo appearance onstage at the Sacred Fools Theatre in Hollywood in the serialized play "Darque Magick" from writer/director Jenelle Riley. For months, the lead character in "Darque Magick" had been making references to his obsession with Gosling, finally culminating in the actor appearing in a videotaped plea for the character to return his dog.

On December 13, 2007, Gosling was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor - Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Lars and the Real Girl. A week later, he was subsequently nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award. He had also received a Broadcast Film Critics Association nomination and won a Satellite Award for this performance as well. In February 2008, he was presented with the inaugural Independent Award at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. In her introduction, presenter Jenelle Riley called him "the most consistent and compelling actor working today."

On January 12th, 2008, Courtney Love stated that Ryan Gosling would portray her former husband, Kurt Cobain, in his upcoming bio film. In January 2008, it was announced that Gosling would be appearing in a reboot of the Jack Ryan franchise, By Any Means Necessary.

On December 25, 2008 Gosling's band Dead Man's Bones released a music video and free download for their song “In The Room Where You Sleep.”

Of all the cast from Breaker High to make it I never would have put money on him. tongue I was sure it would be Tyler Labine (who you may recognize more from Reaper).

Michael Ironside

He's played our favorite villains. From over the top characters such as Revok in David Cronenberg's "Scanners", to the understated but brilliantly played (notice the perfect New England accent) Bob Brown in Wolfgang Petersen's The Perfect Storm, Michael Ironside is one of the most visible Canadian actors working today. He is also a writer, and has produced for both the large and small screen.

One of Ironside's first roles was a memorable turn as evil telepath Darryl Revok in Scanners (1981), an early film by David Cronenberg. His breakthrough role was in the television miniseries V: The Final Battle (1984) as Ham Tyler. He is also known for his roles in Top Gun (1986) as Naval Aviator Lieutenant Commander Rick 'Jester' Heatherly), Extreme Prejudice (1987) as Major Paul Hackett, and Total Recall (1990) as Richter (the murderous henchman of Ronny Cox's villain Cohaagen). Ironside played the villainous General Katana in the sci-fi sequel Highlander II: The Quickening (1991) and, after a brief stint in ER's inaugural season, he was tapped to replace Roy Scheider as captain of the high-tech submarine seaQuest in the third season of seaQuest DSV as Captain Oliver Hudson. However, NBC cancelled the series after only thirteen episodes with Ironside as the star. In 1997, Ironside was reunited with Total Recall director Paul Verhoeven for Starship Troopers. He also appeared in The Perfect Storm (2000) and The Machinist (2004).

Ironside has also been recognized for his voice acting. He played the voice of iconic comic book villain Darkseid in Superman: The Animated Series and its spin-off, Justice League to great accolade. In one episode of The New Batman Adventures, he voiced Batman in a Dark Knight sequence. Another part he also happened to play in the DC Comics universe was Lois Lane's father, General Sam Lane in two episodes of Smallville.

He has also worked in video games as the voice of Tom Clancy's character Sam Fisher in the Splinter Cell games and is cast as the Global Defense Initiative's Lieutenant General Jack Granger in Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. Ironside recently signed a 5-year deal to portray Captain Jonas Trager in the Spaceworks Television scifi series, Ice Planet.

Ironside is one of my personal favourites. Such presence...He just oozes "BADASS"...First really noticed him in the tv miniseries 'V: The Final Battle'. Loved him ever since. Almsot never gives a bad performance (lone exception: HIGHLANDER 2: THE QUICKENING)

The man is awesome. "Everyone fights- no one quits."

He's also Prince Xizor's long lost non-green brother, as portrayed on the SOTE cover art.

Margot Kidder

She is the actress best known for her portrayal of a modern, self-assured Lois Lane in the Christopher Reeves "Superman" films. She has also been active in various social causes, with Amnesty International, and the Woman's Movement, and the Rev. Jesse Jackson Campaign, to name a few. Margot Kidder's life and times, and her much publicized battle with bi-polar disorder will be chronicled in her book titled "Calamities".

In addition to the Superman movies, Kidder has starred in The Amityville Horror, Willie and Phil, Some Kind of Hero with Richard Pryor and The Great Waldo Pepper opposite Robert Redford. She has also made uncredited cameo appearances in Maverick and Delirious.

In 1983, Kidder produced and starred as Eliza Doolittle in a TV version of Pygmalion with Peter O'Toole.

In 1990, she appeared in introductions for the Discovery Channel's "Best of the BBC" series of repackaged documentaries, among them Making of a Continent.

In 1994, Kidder played the bartender at the "Broken Skull" tavern in Under a Killing Moon, an IBM PC adventure game.

In 2004, Kidder briefly returned to the Superman franchise in two episodes of the television program Smallville, as Dr. Bridgette Crosby, an emissary of Dr. Swann (played by her Superman co-star, Christopher Reeve). Also that year, Kidder made an appearance on a Canadian sitcom, Robson Arms, set in an apartment block in Vancouver's west end. She played a quirky neighbor of the main cast members. She also had a cameo in Rich Hall's Election Special on BBC Four.

In 2007, Kidder started appearing on the television series Brothers and Sisters, playing Emily Craft. Additionally, Kidder played Sally Cima, and was the mother of protagonist Greg Cima, a high school tailback for Kanab High School in Kanab, Utah, in the film Windrunner.

Most recently, she took a prominent role as an embattled guidance counselor named Dorothy Fisher in the 2008 gay-themed mystery film On the Other Hand, Death.

She has also done extensive stage work, including The Vagina Monologues.

Vivacious, but then bipolars often are. She did have talent, but the 70's and 80's weren't good times for actresses.
