Well, if you're going to do famous Canadian actors...I mean, there is famous, and then there is FAMOUS. Bairstow? Bain? How about Jim Carrey? Mike Myers? John Candy? Lorne Greene? Hume Cronyn? William Shatner? Catherine O'Hara? Ellen Page?

I will get to all of those in time. I am doing this in Alphabetical order so Carrey will be soon and Shatner will be much later.

Slow and steady is good, I'd say. Granted, they seem to have included every member of SAG with a Canadian birth certificate. But I recognized all the names, which I suppose should be deeply disturbing to me. tongue

Genevieve Bujold

She is the star of over 50 films, including David Cronenberg's "Dead Ringers", and Michael Crichton's "Coma". Genevieve Bujold made her debut in "Amanita Pestilens" in 1963, and also starred as Cleopatra in "The Hallmark Television Playhouse" production of "Caesar and Cleopatra".

Career

Bujold appeared in a variety of film roles for Canadian and U.S. television earning a 1967 Emmy Award nomination for her performance as Joan of Arc in an NBC "Hallmark Hall of Fame" presentation. That year, she married Canadian film director Paul Almond, who directed her in Isabel (1968), and Act of the Heart (1970), opposite Donald Sutherland. They had a son, Matthew, in 1968 and were divorced in 1972. Also in 1968, she won the Prix Suzanne Bianchetti as the most promising young actress in French film.

In 1969, she starred opposite Richard Burton in the film Anne of the Thousand Days. For her performance, she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a motion-picture drama as well as a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Bujold was touted to become a star, but her temper led to run-ins with her employer Universal Studios and she walked away from her contract, resulting in a lawsuit (which was settled when she agreed to appear in the 1974 disaster film Earthquake). In the ensuing years she appeared in films such as The Trojan Women (1971, opposite Katharine Hepburn and Vanessa Redgrave), Kamouraska (1973), Brian De Palma's Obsession (1976), Alex and the Gypsy (1976, opposite Jack Lemmon), the medical thriller Coma (1978, opposite Michael Douglas), Choose Me (1984, directed by Alan Rudolph) and Tightrope (1984, starring Clint Eastwood). She won the Best Actress in a Leading Role Genie Award for Murder by Decree (1979).

In 1994, she signed on to play the lead character, Captain Nicole Janeway, in the American television series Star Trek: Voyager. However she dropped out after filming just a few scenes of the series' first episode. She cited a number of reasons, including a TV series work schedule being too demanding, differences with the producers on how to play the character and even claiming she was offended that producers wanted her to "pad" her uniform to give Janeway a more attractive figure for the Star Trek's predominantly male fan base. Kate Mulgrew replaced her and the character's name was changed to Kathryn Janeway.

Bujold — who spent several years away from her acting career after giving birth to a second son, Emmanuel, in 1980 (she re-emerged in the 1984 Alan Rudolph film Choose Me) — continues to work in film, primarily with independent production companies.

She is a talented actress, but the 70's and 80's weren't a good time for actresses. And turning down Janeway showed a lack of management. Okay, it's a time monster, but it also meant financial security. And what other work has she done lately?

Coma is probably what she is best known for which is unfortunate. She always seemed like she should have been bigger than she ever became (perhaps that was by choice?) She fits in the 'exotic beauty' category I think--really attractive to some people, not very to others. A decent actress overall but with a steady but unremarkable career.

He seems to be becoming the go-to guy for Native American roles--at least his resume sure bears that out. That would be unfortunate because, based on Flags of Our Fathers (and Windtalkers to a lesser extent), he seems to have more to offer as an actor than just being typecast. I haven't seen much of his TV work.

It is unfortunate--old native guy is cast with Graham Green; younger native guy is Beach. He has more to offer.

Gil Bellows

He is best known for his role on Ally McBeal, but the versatile actor was also featured as Tommy Williams in "The Shawshank Redemption" (sporting short blonde hair), and "Love and a 45", again, playing a tough character. He won a Screen Actors Guild Award in 1998 for his role on Ally McBeal, and he has also been seen on TV's "The Practice", and "Law and Order".

Bellows will play a State Department Officer in 24: Exile, a television movie prequel to the seventh season of 24.

Might want to change the name of the thread so people know who is being discussed wink

Although with Gil Bellows I don't think it will matter much. One of those interchangeable faces in a sea of actors (to me at least).

Jim Carrey

He always knew who, and what he wanted to be; when he was only ten years old, he sent his "resume" to the Carol Burnett Show", and would perform comedy routines at school regularly. His father, a musician who had also done comedy from time to time, had abandoned his dreams in favor of a more "secure" job to feed his family, only to end up unemployed and poor in his latter years. Jim vowed to follow his dreams, understanding that there are no "safe" jobs, and wrote himself a postdated million dollar cheque in order to stay focused on his goal. He never cashed the cheque, having instead left it in his father's grave. Jim's box-office successes have far exceeded the million dollar mark. He is the highest paid comic actor working today, and his rise to fame nothing short of inspiring.
