My first memory of Carrey is seeing some of his stand-up on TV (very funny) and his ill-fated "Duck Factory" (or something like that) TV show. I can't say I enjoyed Carrey early on--c'mon, Ace Ventura was crap, but he has grown on me over the years. I always liked Dumb and Dumber, and he was exceptionally good in Man on the Moon. He seems to be over now. His penchant for drama and heavy roles of late has killed the comedy side, and I think comedy is where we all would like to see him return.

He hasn't been very funny in the last 5 years or so, but the stuff he did in the 90's was brilliant.

I know it's up for debate, but he's the reason the Wayans brothers have a career. He was a revelation on "In Living Color" waaaay back when.

I appreciate that he tries to push the envelope and challenge himself with the projects he chooses.. In that regard he's had much more success (and seems much less afraid of failure) then Adam Sandler...

That story about sending his resume to the Carol Burnett show is really interesting. He would've fit right in with Tim Conway and Harvey Korman.

She is best known as Julia from the long running Fox show "Party of Five". The first time I remember seeing her was in a Pepsi commercial (or maybe it was coke) in the late 80s or early 90s. Yummy grin

Anyway, a pretty respectable actress. I guess "Party of Five" will always be what she is known for as her current career seems sporadic. I can't think of anything too spectacular over the last few years that she has been in.

John Candy

He is just one of the many success stories that have stemmed from Toronto's brilliant SCTV comedy crew. The late John Candy, best remembered for playing the jolly, annoying, but nonetheless likeable fat man in over 60 TV shows and hit films, made his film acting debut in what was also Arnold Schwartzenegger's film: "Hercules in New York". Aside fom acting, John Candy also produced "Who's Harry Crumb", and he directed the TV movie "Hostage for a Day" in 1994; his writing credits include several sketches for SCTV, and SCTV Network 90.

Candy had a lot more soul than the two comedians to whom he is often compared, John Belushi and Chris Farley.

Agreed. John Candy could connect with an audience not only on a comedic level, but also on an emotional one. Planes, Trains and Automobiles comes to mind immediately.

And coincidently, Cool Runnings has just been shown on UK TV. Great film.

Such a shame he had to die in his prime.

I've always loved movies that John Candy was in, you definitely could relate to his characters. I loved his role in Cool Runnings, and he was brilliant in Spaceballs.

His work on the old SCTV show is just incredible comedy. Check it out, if you ever get the chance...Lots of talent came outta that.

My personal favourite Candy film will probably always be "Uncle Buck". I don't know why, but that one always makes me laugh.

Marie-Josée Croze

She is the Quebec film star who won a best actress Genie Award for her lead role in Denis Villeneuve's "Maelstrom", which also won for best Film, and best Director in 2000. Marie-Josée also starred in several TV series, including "The Hunger", and made-for-cable movies, and she played Mara in the mega-flop, "Battlefield Earth". This minor moment aside, the real future seems bright for the 30-year-old ingénue, who has just signed on as the lead in Karim Hussain's "Ascension", another film, which like "Maelstrom", should establish her as a serious actor's actor. Who knows... There may be an Oscar on the horizon...

I know nothing about Croze, but back to John Candy...truly a great and gifted funny man. To be perfectly honest, most of his movies weren't all that good (with notable exceptions) but his SCTV days are pure gold. A very talented man who didn't take care of himself unfortunately. He had a lot of good years left in him.

I think his death is one of those "where were you when you heard..." moments for Canadians.
