..i dunno guys.. i'm curious as to when he's actually played someone who isn't just Brendan Fraser... I saw "The Quiet American' AND "Gods and Monsters"..Heck i remember his big breakthru in "School Ties"!

And i gotta say that i find his performances in "The Mummy" movies to be kinda forced and irritating...Maybe that's not entirely his fault.. The whole SERIES seems a forced attempt to try to recreate some of the flare of Indiana Jones, but honestly... They fail miserably..

Yes, he's likeable cause he doesn't take himself seriously... That's because, much like Keanu, i think he understands and accepts his place in the acting world..

That's about it. Frasier isn't an acting powerhouse or anything, but he makes a good affable action/adventurer lead, and has worked pretty well in some of his serious roles (Gods and Monsters and The Quiet American being the two obvious ones). He plays to his strengths, so I have no particular problem with him being out there doing his thing.

Michael J. Fox

He wanted to avoid confusion with another actor named Michael Fox, so he added a J.
He dropped out of high-school to pursue fame and fortune in Hollywood at the age of 18, landing a string of small parts in various films before he would win the part of Alex on the popular 80's sitcom Family Ties. Today, Michael J. Fox lives in New York, spending most of his time at home with his family, and keeping his TV appearance few- and-far-between. Michael's awards list include 3 Emmys for "Family Ties", along with 3 Golden Globes for "Spin City".

Glenn Ford

He was born in Ste-Christine, Quebec, Glenn Ford, a.k.a.: Gwyllyn Samuel Newton Ford, has had a long and impressive career as one of the greatest actors in cinema; he is perhaps best known for his work with Frank Capra, and for playing family-men, but he was nonetheless impressive as Dave Bannion in German director Fritz Lang's first American feature "The Big Heat", and as Sidney Poitier's teacher in the teen classic "The Blackboard Jungle".

Following military service, Ford's breakthrough role was in 1946, starring alongside Rita Hayworth in Gilda. He went on to be a leading man opposite her in a total of five films. While the movie is mostly remembered as the vehicle for Hayworth's "provocative rendition of a song called Put the Blame on Mame", The New York Times movie reviewer Bosley Crowther praised Ford's "stamina and poise in a thankless role" despite the movie's poor direction.

Ford's career flourished in the 1950s and into the 1960s, and continued into the early 1990s, with an increasing number of television roles. His major roles in thrillers, dramas and action films include A Stolen Life with Bette Davis, The Secret of Convict Lake with Gene Tierney, The Big Heat, Framed, Blackboard Jungle, Interrupted Melody with Eleanor Parker, Experiment in Terror with Lee Remick, Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Ransom!, Superman and westerns such as The Fastest Gun Alive, 3:10 to Yuma and Cimarron. Ford's versatility also allowed him to star in a number of popular comedies, including The Teahouse of the August Moon, Don't Go Near the Water, The Gazebo, Cry For Happy, and The Courtship of Eddie's Father.

In 1971, Ford signed with CBS to star in his first television series, a half hour comedy/drama titled The Glenn Ford Show. However, CBS head Fred Silverman noticed that many of the featured films being shown at a Glenn Ford film festival were westerns. He suggested doing a western series instead, which resulted in the "modern day western" series, Cade's County. Ford played southwestern Sheriff Cade for one season (1971-1972) in a mix of western drama and police mystery. In The Family Holvak (1975-1976), Ford portrayed a depression era preacher in a family drama, reprising the same character he had played in the TV film The Greatest Gift. Julie Harris co-starred as his wife and Lance Kerwin as his son.

In 1978, Ford had a supporting role in Superman, as Clark Kent's adopted father, Jonathan Kent, a role that introduced Ford to a new generation of film audiences. Ford's final scene in the film begins with a direct reference to Blackboard Jungle - the earlier film's theme song "Rock Around the Clock" is heard on a car radio.

In 1991, Ford agreed to star in a cable network series, African Skies. However, prior to the start of the series, he developed blood clots in his legs which required a lengthy stay in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Eventually he recovered, but at one time his situation was so severe that he was listed in critical condition. Ford was forced to drop out of the series and was replaced by Robert Mitchum.

The 2006 movie Superman Returns includes a scene where Ma Kent (played by Eva Marie Saint) stands next to the living room mantel after Superman returns from his quest to find remnants of Krypton. On that mantel is a picture of Pa Kent (as played by Glenn Ford). This "cameo" of sorts was Ford's last screen appearance (the photograph is more easily visible in a deleted scene included with the DVD release of the film).

I guess he lasted a long time because of his versatility, and because he was never quite a front-rank star. Some very good movies:
"Gilda" is a favorite; "3:10 to Yuma" (the original, in which he is very good), and the Lang picture.

Lorne Greene

He was a student in Chemical Engineering at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, before he decided to work in the theater. This career move led him to become the "Voice of Canada" on CBC Radio before he would serve as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WW2. Another one of Lorne's achievements in radio broadcasting was the invention of a reverse chronometer that would help announcers countdown during broadcasts. When Television became the medium of choice, Lorne Greene's first fictional characterization was that of "Big Brother" in a production of George Orwell's 1984. Lorne Greene is best known for his portrayal of Ben Cartwright in the TV series "Bonanza", as well as Commander Adama in the 70s cult sci-fi series "Battlestar Galactica"; he also has many motion picture credits to his name, as well as a few album releases where Lorne's deep booming voice can be heard over Country and Western themed orchestral pieces.

Tom Green

He is redefining comedy. his work has been panned by some, acclaimed by others, and generally feared by small animals worldwide. Tom's humble beginnings date back to 1987, when he, and his buddy Phil performed stand up comedy routines at Yuk Yuks in Ottawa. Not too long after, Tom's cable access show began airing on the Rodgers network, followed by guest spots on TV, and movies, including wife Drew Barrymore's blockbuster hit "Charlie's Angels", where the pair met. Tom's bizarre brand of humor is not limited to film, and video, with past experience in a Hip Hop group, and a CD release. Tom is also involved in worthy causes, most notably, Tom Green's Nuts Cancer Fund, where proceeds go to research on the treatment of Testicular Cancer, a serious illness Tom was diagnosed, and treated for in 2000.

Early career

While attending Algonquin College, Green hosted an over-night call-in show on the University of Ottawa's campus radio station, CHUO. The show, originally a rap music show, was followed by an electronic music show hosted by Glenn Humplik. Through the proximity of their shows, Tom and Glenn met and became friends, based on a common love of zany antics. Tom's radio show soon shifted formats to a call-in show (upon the discovery of how to operate the studio's call-in lines) and the two joined forces to host The Midnight Caller Show. The basic format of The Midnight Caller was to have listeners call-in with Tom and Glenn making fun of them (or "razzing" them) and soon after hanging-up on them. The show's novelty and originality made it an underground hit in the Ottawa area.

The first incarnation of The Tom Green Show began in September 1994 as a cable access program on Rogers Television 22 in the Ottawa region until 1996. The show would later be picked up in Canada by The Comedy Network in 1997 and then MTV in January 1999, where he gained popularity in the United States. The Tom Green Show was a variety show format, where he would have guests visit the studio and bands play before a live audience. He also had taped segments that typically consisted of stunts played by Green on unsuspecting people. A number of them involved Green's parents, Mary Jane and Richard Green, who consistently appeared unamused and occasionally angered by Tom's antics.

As an example of his audacity, in a March 2000 episode, Tom brought Monica Lewinsky to his parents' home in Canada to search for fabric for her new business venture in designing handbags. In a similar vein to his later faux attempt at an on-air marriage to Drew Barrymore on Saturday Night Live, Tom and Monica fooled local reporters with an "important announcement" which turned out to be nothing more than a request for more fabric for Lewinsky's handbags.

A frequent rumor says that the show was cancelled because of an alleged segment where Green shows up at a bar mitzvah, or another Jewish event, dressed as Adolf Hitler. Green, however, has repeatedly denied that such a segment exists, and there is no evidence to suggest otherwise.

Some of Green's most notable skits include pretending to "hump" a dead moose, having an X-rated lesbian scene painted on his father's car (labeled the "Slut Mobile"), drinking milk by sucking on a cow's teat, and putting a cow head in his parents' bed while they slept because his father was a fan of The Godfather films. Green also hung his own unauthorized piece of art in the National Gallery of Canada (which remained untouched for days), similar to the subsequent exploits of British graffiti artist Banksy, with the added twist of later coming back and vandalizing it to the horror of onlooking patrons. In one segment, Green went to the press conference of Grey Owl where he serenaded and kissed Pierce Brosnan. Brosnan, thinking Green was a journalist, advised him not to give up his day job. Green also did many segments humiliating his co-host and longtime friend Glenn Humplik; even after the pair had become well-known, Humplik continued working at his phone company job, fearing that his entertainment career might not last. Green teased him about this often and once gave out Humplik's office phone number on the air.

In 2003, he also had a nightly talk show, The New Tom Green Show, in the style of Jay Leno, at midnight on MTV. The show lasted several months, and was much more mainstream and similar to his later Tom Green Live format. Jesse James Dupree, the frontman of the Southern rock band Jackyl, made the ill-advised decision to take a chainsaw to Tom Green’s new desk when he appeared on Green’s short-lived MTV talk show in 2003. The unplanned stunt clearly irritated Green and he made no attempt to hide his displeasure. He eventually began his planned musical performance (himself on drums and Dupree on guitar) but continued to verbally spar with Dupree for a short period before abandoning the drums mid-song in apparent disgust and walking off stage. Later on in the evening, he again insulted the band by holding up Jackyl's most recent album and advising viewers to "check it out if you like music that was cool fifteen years ago" and then proceeded to smash it with a hammer.

Beyond television

After the show moved to MTV, Green gained fame in the United States. This fame soon netted Green roles in several Hollywood movies, including Road Trip, Charlie's Angels, Freddy Got Fingered (which he also directed), and Stealing Harvard. Freddy Got Fingered "won" in five categories at the 2001 Golden Raspberry Awards, given to the worst movies of the year. Green appeared at the ceremony to accept his awards, making him the second recipient to do so in the award's twenty-year history, following Paul Verhoeven for Showgirls in 1995.

He also wrote a song called "Lonely Swedish (The Bum Bum Song)", which he composed during MTV's Spring Break while doing a show on a cruise ship. After airing the music video on his show and appealing to his audience to request it, the song became an instant number one hit on Total Request Live. He quickly called for the video to be retired because "it's not fair to 98 Degrees." Later, in his autobiography, he revealed that MTV had pressured him to do so in order to maintain the image that Total Request Live was, in fact, a live request show (the next week's episodes had been pre-taped on location, and the producers of the show were completely unaware of "The Bum Bum Song" at the time).

Green's increasing fame made it harder for him to ambush people on the streets, leading him to target mostly senior citizens and non-English speakers. After he was diagnosed with testicular cancer in March 2000, he stopped production on his TV show, but he continued to appear on the channel via reruns and other promotional materials. He made a one-hour special on his ordeal with cancer, including graphic footage of his own surgery. The episode received wide critical acclaim for revealing a vulnerable, human side of an otherwise juvenile television personality. In 2002, he also starred in and directed a one-hour special called The Tom Green Subway Monkey Hour, where he tormented strangers in Japan.

Is there a Irritating Canadians thread?
